Hope springs eternal for Star Wars fans

Per a new survey, 63% of Star Wars fans expect The Force Awakens to be the franchise’s best movie yet. Oh, but wait – it gets better:

Just 15% of fans surveyed cited director J.J. Abrams as fueling their high hopes for “Force Awakens.” Most of the excitement surrounds VFX: 36% of respondents said “more advanced CGI” technology is a reason it will be the best “Star Wars” movie yet. Meanwhile, 25% cited a “more interesting story”; another 25% expect the movie to be “more true to the ‘Star Wars’ series”; and 14% pointed to a better cast.

Now, I’m cautiously optimistic about the new film, but it’s hard to side-eye this. I mean, it’s not like sky-high expectations have ever come to bite us in the ass before, right?

Right?

Oh, fandom. Never change.

Boba Fett is popular. You don’t say?

Apparently ‘the fans’ want more Boba Fett, according to some IGN poll I never even heard of until now.

Whatever, fanboys. I’m not going to deny that the character is insanely crowd-pleasing, if perhaps not in our circle. You can bet even money that Lucasfilm will make him the subject of one of the standalone films. But please keep him, Darth Maul, and all the other cool-looking but otherwise b-list dead dudes (at least in the movies) out of Episode VII. There’s plenty of other places for shameless pandering.

Also: Remember how he got his ass whooped in This Is Madness by Darth Vader? There may be hope for fandom after all.

Dave Filoni “exploring new Star Wars content” for Disney?

Disney Channels Worldwide boss Gary Marsh also said the company is “working closely with LucasFilm, Kathleen Kennedy and director Dave Filoni (Star Wars: The Clone Wars) to explore new Star Wars content for our platforms,” to be detailed later this year.

It does echo the announcement from the other day, but any port in a storm. (via)

Poll: Will you go see The Phantom Menace in 3D this weekend?

So Friday sees the release of The Phantom Menace 3D. Drew McWeeny praises the conversion, and his kid loved it (and he has a funny story about being banned from Skywalker Ranch.) Coming Soon’s Chris and Benjamin Mason were “blown away” by the conversion, though Richard Gray of The Reel Bits is less impressed, calling it “disappointing” and “murky.” But it’s The Phantom Menace, so of course the reviews are mixed.

In any case, our pal Bryan Young really wants you to see it. Others… Not so much. (I’m debating, but… Well.) Of course.
