Heilemann’s Star Wars collection is no more

His fantastic set of Star Wars images on Flickr is gone. It’s not too surprising, with the collection’s latest burst of popularity, that he got a C&D, but it’s still a big loss for the fandom. In his entry addressing the situation, he’s pretty brutal on Lucasfilm and StarWars.com, and I can’t entirely blame him:

Anyway, the take-down is a fair legal move as it were, even if I don’t (obviously) agree with it. After all, the collection was an attempt at remedying the exact _lack_ of such similar resources from Lucasfilm. Thousands of people have passed through the collection and been ecstatic at the chance to peek in behind the scenes at a mythology and a series of films that are forever, and I think that it is remarkable that even now, we all carry these films with us.

This is what starwars.com should be doing! But instead of its initial potential, it has grown into a tired, empty husk of a marketing machine, not only poorly designed technically (and a usability nightmare!), but also trying so desperately to promote the Clone Wars show that it has forgotten the very magic that once propelled the world into the stars, on May 25th, 1977.

As I said last time I linked him, I truly hope that one day LFL themselves would someday set up something similar. But in today’s economic climate, even a corporate behmouth like Lucasfilm probably isn’t supporting its website in all the ways it could. I can’t be angry at the StarWars.com folks – they do what they can, but a handful of people can only do so much.

The beauty of the internet is that we can do it ourselves, and often do – look at Wookieepedia. But then something like this happens, and we end up wondering why we bother.

The Clone Wars premiere tonight!

StarWars.com has episode guides and preview clips for ‘Ambush’ and ‘Rising Malevolence’. Meanwhile, The Clone Wars web comic launches.

StarWars.com redesigns, streamlines

The new StarWars.com

They were redesigning. Sneaky, sneaky… I had a few issues with the site last night, viewing it on a computer with an older version of Flash (hey, I’d upgrade if I could) but those are all pretty much gone now. It’s a vast improvement over the random Flash-and-planets front that they’ve been sporting since C4, and a lot more dynamic. Several sections are also sporting the new design, including news posts and Databank. (I do miss having a dedicated news page, but there’s always the archives.)

And from this end, at least, it seems the launch went fairly smoothly. (We had some ‘page not found’ errors last night, but they seem to have cleared up.)

(Mostly) complete screenshot is under the cut for posterity. Continue reading “StarWars.com redesigns, streamlines”

Well, something is happening on StarWars.com

Just another Clone Wars Flash front piece, though… It’s pretty extensive, with actual content, including some pretty nice galleries (TFN spotted a pink R2,) a sharpshooter game, and more ‘coming soon’… But if you’re hoping for something other than The Clone Wars, no cigarra. Still, at least now we know they’re not just sitting around playing the new Grand Theft Auto.

I wouldn’t click that link at work, though – at least not before you mute your speakers.

Theory: A new StarWars.com?

EU Cantina has video of Steve’s presentation at Disney World this weekend. He also talks about Skywalker Ranch, the Presidio, The Force Unleashed, and of course, a lot about The Clone Wars.

He briefly mention StarWars.com and ‘some changes…’ Does that, combined with the site’s recent radio silence (the last news item is dated May 29th, and even blogging has been sparse) mean the site is getting a real overhaul, as opposed to just another Flash splash page?

Just don’t make it all in Flash, please…
