Rumors: A closer look at the Greenham Common X-wings… And who’s flying them?

Rumors!Latino Review has dropped Da7e Gonzales’ Friday column early, and it features more (and clearer) pictures of the second X-wing, as well as a few details on how the starfighters figure in.

The ships may be real, but the plot/character stuff? I shrug. But I will note that it does sound like something (someones?) who could be primed for a spin-off.

As for the other big bombshell (so to speak) of the week, I’m already sick of the Death Star crap that’s floating around the J.J. Abrams pic from the other day. That well is dried up, thanks in no small part to Return of the Jedi. The part of me that railed against the fetish back in the days of Kevin J. Anderson is wary, but I wouldn’t count out a superweapon of some kind. But an actualfax Death Star? No matter what you believe about the Empire itself, it’s not so far-fetched that there are a ton of Star Destroyers with similar light packages and shiny floors still around.

Yes, some pockets of resistance have recently emerged to the retro-heavy looks we’ve seen thus far, but let’s give them a tad more credit than recycling an idea for the third time. Remember, we haven’t seen the full package yet, and somehow I doubt they brought in Doug Chiang and Iain McCaig just to touch up some old McQuarrie pieces.

Today in Episode VII: Will stuff from the sequel trilogy make it into Rebels? Probably, duh.

rebels3Entertainment Weekly is acting like they’ve never heard the term ‘Lucasfilm Story Group’ before in an article today where they ‘exclusively’ inform us that things from Episode VII may very well show up in Rebels.

“There are characters, vehicles, imagery that are introduced in the show before we’ve ever seen them in the movies, possibly including VII,” Simon Kinberg tells them.

Of course, he told /Film back at SDCC that “We haven’t really talked about that,” so take it as you will. Playing coy is the name of the game here, I suppose. But consider that season 2 of Rebels is likely to premiere next October, just as we’re likely to see some serious marketing ramp up for Episode VII, and it seems pretty likely that the two are going to tie together with something more significant than some ships and speeders. On that hand, it does seem a bit early to unleash the certain point of viewing, so they really want you to watch Rebels.

In other news/rumors…

→ There’s now a video from the Greenham Common set, and someone thinks they’ve spotted a different kind of X-wing. Maybe this one can really be a Headhunter, for the truthers.

→ On that note, could Daisy Ridley’s character name indeed be [redacted]? Well, as always: Maybe?

Where in the galaxy is Luke Skywalker? Round, umm, let’s say 5.

Mark Ruffalo wants in. Aww, Mark Ruffalo.

→ Are we really taking random message board posters seriously now? Because now there’s one who claims to know all about Adam Driver’s role. Okay!

Falcon, X-wing spotted on location?

spoilers-swirl-bespinA simulations engineer spotted what looks to be part of the Millennium Falcon and a ‘disguised’ X-wing while flying over a former Royal Air Force station in Berkshire. (The BBC spoke to the photographer, Matthew Myatt.) This may be where that earlier report of sod comes in… (via)

It looks like the X-wing may be parked in front of what used to be a missile silo. Scroll down to the second set of pictures on the Greenham Common page at bunkertours.co.uk to see something that looks likely, as well as some more information on the site.

UPDATE: And it seems there’s more than one X-wing.

Episode VII not likely to return to Skellig Michael

rumors-skellContrary to what Latino Review reported last week, it seems that Episode VII is unlikely to return to Skellig Michael to shoot further scenes, per the Irish Examiner. “No filming has been scheduled for Skellig Michael in the coming months,” they were told by Louise Ryan of the Irish Film Board. (via)

I seem to recall there was some scuttlebut floating about during the first shoot that it was originally scheduled for the fall, and moved up due to Harrison Ford’s injury, so perhaps that’s where the second date comes in.

Today in Episode VII: Rumordumping on the Sith, Skelling Michael, and that stormtrooper photo

rumors-skell → There’s a new rumordump from Dave Gonzales at Latino Review addressing some of the rumors floating around: Mainly Sith, Luke’s location, and what the Skelling Michael location will be. Shrug.

Star Wars Episode 7 News thinks they have proof the stormtrooper helmet pics are legit. Of course, none of us have any idea if that kind of thing can be faked, so again, shrug. It’s not like that light pattern is super unusual (or not possible indoors, though I’ll let the light-spectrum geeks debate that one.) I wouldn’t go so far as to call it confirmed, but it’s certainly possible.

→ And finally, let’s recall the innate ridiculousness of rumors with Always Star Wars, who looks back at some things we heard before The Phantom Menace. Ben Kenobi owns the Millennium Falcon!

Rumor: Guess who’s back in Episode VII? (Tell a friend.)

George Lucas and Ian McDiarmid on set, chillin' like a Time LordLatino Review came out in the middle of the night to add a new wrinkle to Sith-based rumor packet: That Palpatine will be back, but he won’t be the same, i.e. played by Ian McDiarmid. This isn’t the first time we’ve heard something like this, though previous rumors (including one from Latino Review themselves) mostly pointed towards McDiarmid and a Force Ghost situation.

Cue another round of tedious Dark Empire analogies and angst, but personally I’m just going to give this go the full batshit: Palpatine is Time Lord. He regenerates. Pass it on.

Today in Episode VII: Dinner with Edgar

dai-jj-johnJ.J. Abrams, John Boyega and Daisy Ridley were at a dinner party (?) with director Edgar Wright. There was some jumping on this as a ‘sign’ of Wright being involved with Star Wars, but I think maybe Slashfilm has the best idea – that J.J. may just want to geek out with someone who can actually keep a damn secret. Or maybe they’re just buds and/or they’re all trolling us again. Who knows! (Random trivia I was unaware of before today: Wright produced Attack the Block, Boyega’s feature debut.)

→ Meanwhile, Adam Driver is officially out of hiding as GQ’s latest cover story. He doesn’t talk much about Star Wars, but it’s got some decent (if very ::sideeye:: guy mag) stuff on his background.

Slate has a new Star Wars Rumor Generator. This one does posters!
