Download Droidmaker for free

droidmakerOn the basis of it being mentioned in Heilemann’s widely-linked Maker of Films post, Michael Rubin is making his book Droidmaker available for free in PDF.

This is likely a limited-time thing, so nab them quickly… Or you can go buy the book, since as I recall it’s pretty hefty – too much so to read the whole thing on a screen. Plus, that’s just the right thing to do… Now I gotta wonder where my copy is. (Probably went into a JadeCon teacup auction, come to think of it…)

Hopes and expectations for San Diego’s Star Wars Spectacular

The Death Star at CIVSo as I said last week, I pretty firmly believe that Sansweet and company are finally going to bust out the official Celebration V announcement next month at San Diego Comic Con, but I’m not sure that really justifies airing the thing on G4.

Not that C5 wouldn’t be big news for us, but for the general audience at SDCC and G4 it’s not really wait-in-line or tune-in now material. The second season of The Clone Wars and The Old Republic MMO are certain to make appearances, but the TOR trailer is old news and while it’ll be nice to see Disney’s TCW preview in wide and open release, neither of those are exactly earth-shaking.

No, the ante has been upped; I’m expecting – hoping- something big. Like some major news on the live-action series, perhaps? Hasn’t been much solid on that lately, but there have been those rumors flying around about casting and murmurs about possible shooting locations. (And now… John Williams? Not that IMDB is most reliable of sources at this point in the game.) It’s a long shot… But we can hope. For a name, at the very least.

The fourth is with Spike TV this week

“Contrary to what you’ve just seen, war is neither glamorous nor fun. There are no winners; only losers. There are no good wars, with the following exceptions: the American Revolution, World War II, and the Star Wars Trilogy. If you’d like to learn more about war, there’s lots of books in your local library, many of them with cool gory pictures.”

I doubt this Bart Simpson quote is what they had in mind, but Spike TV is celebrating the ultimate result of the first with an airing of the third next weekend. Which is to say, look for a Star Wars movie to air each night leading up to July 4 – beginning tonight at 6pm with The Phantom Menace.

Space Station crew costumes where no one has gone before?

The mission poster for the latest NASA International Space Station mission decided to boldly go for a Star Trek look. In a case of life-imitating-art-imitating-life, while the ISS crew wear Next Generation uniforms, the background logo is of the NX-01 Enterprise, which featured the ISS in the opening sequence. So does this create a temporal paradox?

NASA had done some other movie parody posters before for its shuttle and ISS expedition teams. No word on when the ISS’ superlaser will be fully charged and operational.

It’s nearly time for San Diego Comic Con…

'Strike a pose with Jabba' by kbaird @ FlickrSo the big SDCC news is of course that G4 will be airing Steve Sansweet’s Star Wars Spectacular panel. Good news for those of us geeks who will actually watch it! Now: Make this a trend. Free the cons! Some are worried that G4 will try to sleaze it up, but quite honestly… I can deal, because I’m about 90% sure we’re going to finally get a Celebration V announcement out of this thing.

  • It seems there are still Fan Club Breakfast tickets, if you’re up to being out and about at 7am on a Friday.
  • Nerf Herders Anonymous has a list of Star Wars guests attending the con. It’s mostly Clone Wars people, but hey, Mark Hamill. There are also at least a few authors attending.
