So yesterday, Erika wrote a piece for us on Her Universe and response that some (but by no means all) male fans have to it. She laid out her case well, and it’s generated quite a bit of discussion. Now, Ashley has posted her response to the issues at hand, namely price, sizes, and design.
It’s important that we understand that Her Universe is a brand-new company, and starting a company from scratch is no mean feat. And it’s particularly tough to please everyone.
What we need most here is patience. It’s not the popular answer, but there it is. If you can’t afford a $30 t-shirt, then you can’t afford a $30 t-shirt. But the hope here is that enough of us can and will, and that will form the base that allows Her Universe to grow. And remember, they haven’t even been selling stuff for an entire year at this point!
Given how accessible Ashley has been to feedback, I expect that each addition to the line will reflect more than a few things that fans have requested, or at least as much is possible at this point. So yes, we have to be patient: There’s a lot of catching up to do here. 30-some years of it.

Attention male Star Wars fans around the world! I say this from the bottom of my heart because us nerd girls, we love you (I should know, I have my own nerd boy). We know that you mean well and sometimes what comes out of your mouths or through the keyboard is not necessarily what you mean to say, but rather can become a bit of a mess in translation and that’s okay. Lately, it’s not. Let me tell you why. Continue reading “Back off, guys: It’s our turn”
Brian Jacob Smith, who plays Matthew Scott on Stargate Universe, has had it with Stargate fans who hate the latest show, yet persist in hanging around to annoy everyone else with how much they hate it.
He took to TwitLonger to let one fan, in particular, know just how he felt. But, hey, it applies.
Please don’t lurk in the shadows and wait for an opportunity to turn our enthusiasm against us. It’s such a rotten thing to do, and I’m struggling to understand why you think it’s perfectly fine. If you need a good example of why this fanbase is so divided and full of animosity, just refer to your comment.
So far, I’m not seeing a specific groundswell of topics about this over in the wild west of the Gateworld forum, but I’m sure this will strike a note. It’s been a long-standing problem in fandom and I, for one, am glad to see Brian stand up to it.
Early next month, LFL and Cartoon Network will be holding several special screenings throughout the country. Head on over to StarWars.com to nab your tickets ASAP.
These two THX mini-docs – one on soundtracks (above) and another on the system itself, have emerged from the laserdisc era to appear on Youtube. Historical! (via)
With all the holiday-ready coffee table tomes officially out and about, we’re pretty much out of luck on the book front until the end of the month, but there’s at least one thing to look forward to this week: Knight Errant: Aflame #2 will make it to comic shops on Wednesday.
Not only did the fifty-six page Serenity: The Shepherd’s Tale hit comic book stores last week (and mine is on back order), delving into Book’s past, everyone in the ‘Verse get a small treat this week: Dark Horse and USA Today have an 8-page comic, Serenity: Downtime up – today just has the first four pages, but the story will continue tomorrow. Joss and Zack Whedon scripted the book on Shepherd Book, while Zack flies solo with the story for ‘Downtime’.
Zombies? Zombies! StarWars.com has posted the first chapter of Joe Shreiber’s Red Harvest as a PDF. Hopefully that will hold you zombie fans off until the tail end of December.
Let it go. There was much discussion late last week on Twitter over the appearance of a character in a Clone Wars preview clip who had been previously killed off in some minor video game several years ago. Y’all might have a case with the Mando stuff (though I still can’t bring myself to care, because Mandos) but this? This is why the phrase ‘don’t sweat the small stuff’ exists.
Interviews. Going back a bit, EUC has summarized some notable bits from an interview that the Fictional Frontiers podcast did with Del Rey’s Shelly Shapiro. She talks about Fate of the Jedi and links to Legacy. Also, Daniel Wallace talks The Jedi Path with StarWars.com.
Street date shuffle. I made a few tweaks to our book release schedule this weekend… Nothing particularly noteworthy, just a few minor adjustments in mid-2011.
With the release of Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 1 just weeks away, the L.A. Times’ Geoff Boucher and Claudia Eller take a look back at the franchise’s Hollywood history.
