ABC “having conversations” about Star Wars TV series

IGN’s Eric Goldman asked ABC’s Paul Lee about seeing Star Wars make the jump to TV today. His answer was a bit roundabout, naturally:

“I certainly have a glint in my eye. They have a lot on their plate when you look at the features that they’re planning on rolling out for the next few years, but we’ve started conversations with them.”

He went on to say “It would be nice to use other strong Disney IP” and that “It’s an amazing world.” I wouldn’t count on seeing or hearing much soon, but at least we know a live-action option is still on their minds.

It’s official: Peter Capaldi is the 12th Doctor

Peter Capaldi

As predicted, the BBC has announced that Peter Capaldi will be the next Doctor.

At 55, he’ll be the oldest Doctor since the days of classic Who. Matt Smith, the current Doctor, was the youngest ever when his casting was announced, at 26.

Capaldi is well known in the U.K., mostly recently for his role on the comedy The Thick of It. He’s previously appear on Doctor Who in 2008’s ‘The Fires of Pompeii’ – an episode that also included future companion Karen Gillian in a bit part – and on the Who spinoff Torchwood.

Video: Best of Star Wars Celebration Europe

Here’s some of my favorite videos from Star Wars Celebration Europe. Up above, Warwick Davis and Ian McDiarmid re-create the Yoda/Sidious battle from Revenge of the Sith. (Trigger warning: Ewoks are stomped upon.) Davis would try to do a bit with each cast member in a segment called “Stage Wars” and below, we have Davis and Carrie Fisher returning to the first encounter between Wicket and Leia. And there’s even more below…CelebrationStageCrew_LowRes Continue reading “Video: Best of Star Wars Celebration Europe”

Video: Warwick Davis and the Five Fetts

Sunday at Celebration Europe was the Fett-tastic Four panel, which quickly turned into a quintet with the surprise arrival of Temuera Morrison to join Jeremy Bulloch, Daniel Logan, John Morton (who filled in as Boba Fett for a few days in The Empire Strikes Back), and Dickey Beer (Boba Fett stunts in Return of the Jedi). The stage show was quite a bit of fun, with Bulloch making his appearance in his 501st Legion Boba Fett costume, and Warwick hosting a series of games to see which of the four Boba Fetts was the best: in shooting Nerf guns at Ewoks, and emoting after Jango’s beheading (aka Four Fetts and a Funeral). Here, Warwick Davis chats with the Fett family about the enduring popularity of Boba Fett.

Of course, it could be nothing but the usual ‘Whoo, yay, Episode VII, here’s a bunch of stuff franchise devotees already know’ spiel. We’ve gotten ourselves all hyped up and resultingly undersold enough lately to know not to count on anything new, no matter what the rumor mill says… Right? (via)

BBC to reveal the 12th Doctor on Sunday

11 Doctors

Well, that was quick: The BBC will reveal the 12th Doctor in a live special this Sunday. The special will air in the U.K. on BBC One at 7p.m., and on BBC America at 2p.m. Eastern. There will be guests including “Doctors old and new” as well as reigning Doctor Matt Smith and executive producer Steven Moffat.

Smith, who’s starred in the show since 2010, has two specials before he hangs up his bow tie for good: The 50th Anniversary special (with the 10th Doctor, David Tennant) in November and the Christmas Special, where he will regenerate into the new actor or actress. The new Doctor will go on to star in the eighth series with current companion Jenna-Louise Coleman.

Celebrations to go without numerals from here on out

Celebration VII Verifying what many of us had already guessed, TheForce.Net says that Lucasfilm has told them that future Celebrations will no longer use the roman numeral designations, but be called by their location and/or year – so instead of Celebration VII, the 2015 convention is offically “Star Wars Celebration 2015” or “Star Wars Celebration Anaheim.”

The decision seems a little odd as, with Episode VII, the cons would still actually line up with their corresponding movies. Is it a hint that the conventions will be moving to a yearly schedule to keep up with the spin-off films as well as the Episodes?

The Celebrations began with Episode I in 1999, and were tied to movie release years during the prequels. After Revenge of the Sith and Celebration III (2005) the U.S. Celebrations kept to the triennial schedule with Celebration IV (2007) and Celebration V (2010.) With 2012’s Celebration VI, the con was moving to a biannual schedule. What the future holds for them after 2015… Well, we’ll see, I guess.

Still, Celebration VII will remain Celebration VII in our hearts… Or at least, our tags.

James picks his favorite Celebration Europe moments

Go home, Greedo, you're drunk!

Here’s some of the highlights of Star Wars Celebration Europe for me. I worked the convention as part of the crew at the Celebration stage in the Grugahalle, which was a giant concert hall next door to the main convention halls, so most of my memories involve being at the Celebration stage, but really it’s all about the people that one encounters at a Star Wars convention – we’re all here because of one thing: we love Star Wars!
