Are the Angry Birds taking on Star Wars?

Finally, a Star Wars game I will actually play! It seems like there have been fan versions of this almost as long as we’ve had Angry Birds themselves…

Anyway, your confirmation: Their just-launched Tumblr posted the above GIF today, along with the following text:

Times Square, New York, October 8th, 10am EST.

HINT: Head to Toys R Us at 8am EST!

Seeing as they have done film tie-ins and their latest game is space-themed, this isn’t unprecedented. Stay tuned…

UPDATE: Fast Company has a few more details… For instance, Luke Skywalker will be replacing the game’s default Red Bird. Lucasfilm and Rovio will be releasing more tie ins – the article mentions toys, apparel, bedding and a Jenga-inspired board game – so don’t expect to get off easy, collectors. (via)

GenCon: Fantasy Flight puts Star Wars RPG into beta, releases X-Wing minis

Fantasy Flight Games, which picked up the license for Star Wars role-playing, card, and miniatures games last year has introduced a beta version of their upcoming Star Wars Role Playing Game at this weekend’s Gen Con in Indianapolis. They’ve also finally released their X-Wing Miniatures Game.

The role-playing game will be beta tested in three installments, and the first, entitled Edge of the Empire, is available (the 224 page rulebook is $30) at GenCon, online, and some select retailers. The game introduces the use of unique, custom dice as part of the gameplay, and includes sticker sheets to customize your own dice. Edge of the Empire focuses on characters at the fringes of society: those in the Outer Rim, and assorted scum and villainy. An Obligation game mechanic will help provide narrative for why the characters are out on the Rim, and what are they running from.

The upcoming beta installments, Age of Rebellion, will focus on being part of the Rebel Alliance, and bringing the fight to the Empire, while Force and Destiny introduces the powers of the Jedi… and being wanted by the Empire. Ben at Word of the Nerd has been gathering some of the buzz at Gen Con about the game, and wonders if it can top the popularity of the last RPG. 30 bucks to beta test a role playing game? I can understand the printing costs…. but… if you end up testing all 3 installments, you might be out close to a Benjamin, for something that is not the final version of the game. (Who they will make their money on: Wookiepedians!)

At Gen Con 2011, Fantasy Flight Games demoed versions of their co-op card game and X-Wing minis game. This year, the X-Wing Miniatures Game has launched, and is available at Gen Con (until it sells out), and Fantasy Flight has put the core rules up online and held a tournament for the game on Friday.

FFG will be at Celebration VI (booth 739) and has announced they will be selling (and demoing) X-Wing. I’m sure that they will also be pushing the Edge of the Empire RPG installment.

Will we also see the card game at some point? It was supposed to come out in the spring, but it was pushed back as they kept tweaking it to make it more epic (and perhaps less akin to their existing Living Card Games).

Star Wars 1313 – Why, it is a video game!

Brace yourselves, people. You not only have me reporting your Star Wars news instead of Dunc, but it’s video game news. So you’re kinda doomed. But let’s see what we can piece together, because it sounds kinda interesting. (And 13 is my favorite number.)

So, as suspected in an earlier round-up of postulation, Star Wars 1313 is, indeed, a video game. It was announced on SpikeTV to coincide with the big Electronic Entertainment Expo (aka E3). It will take place on Level 1313 of Coruscant where you get to be a “lethal bounty hunter” (as opposed to a bounty hunter who, say, hands out marshmallows?) who hunts down marks using “exotic weaponry.” So no powers or lightsabers, here.

Rud was kind enough to explain to us on Twitter that it’s an “over-the-shoulder third person shooter” type of game, as opposed to a first-person shooter. And per other comments on Twitter (nothing but crack reporting here), it looks similar in style to Arkham City.

According to TheForce.Net (who actually watched the whole announcement), we’ll get to see game play on Monday night on SpikeTV.

I kinda like the idea of a shoot-em-up game for Star Wars. I have no skills with lightsabers in video games. It’s kinda pathetic.

So what does everyone think? Are you anticipating awesome with this?

Yawn: Yet another Star Wars video game is coming

Spike and Lucasfilm will be announcing “the next big ‘Star Wars’ game” during the show GTTV on May 31st, just ahead of 2012 Electronic Entertainment Expo. And it’ll be a ‘franchise,’ (ala The Old Republic?) so there may be some repercussions for us non-gamers. (More generic musclebound dudes headlining novels?)

Burning questions: How bad will the game (inevitably) be? Does it have to do with the 1313 mystery? And will it have a dance level? Personally, I’m hoping for dancing, because hilarity. Seriously: Dancing. It’s the only thing LucasArts has done that kind of makes me wish I had a gaming system.

Revenge of the 6th: Our news overflowth

May 4th stuff was a busy Friday, Saturday wasn’t much better, and a whole bunch of stuff got lost in the shuffle. As we nurse our Avengers hangover, here it is.

MTV has wondered why Luke Skywalker got no love from the famous folks, asking our pal Bryan Young why not.

Geekmom is throwing a Star Wars week. So far, they’ve highlighted a video on the 501st and the Rebel Legion, are giving away a GPS and interviewed the Wampug.

The Hollywood Reporter looked at where the stars of Star Wars are now. You probably know that already.

There was a couple at Kotaku: A look at Masters of Teräs Käsi, which they call ‘possibly the worst Star Wars video game ever made,’ as well as great moments of Star Wars gaming. And, finally, why Battlefront III was cancelled.

Entertainment Weekly highlight ten things ‘worth celebrating,’ mostly EU stuff.

And finally, Chris Hardwick pimped Course of the Force on Today. He also revealed that they’ve build a sail barge that we’ll see at Celebration VI.

Video: Han Solo gets down in today’s ridiculously goofy Star Wars tie-in

Because the Slave Leia dance level in Star War Kinect wasn’t ridiculous enough, they made the Carbonite freezing platform a club?

How canon is this, you guys?!?

UPDATE: The reaction to this online has been such varying shades of angry-hilarious – I’ve collected a few choice tweets for later – that Kotaku’s Stephen Totilo wrote a piece on how folks need to simmer down and grow a sense of humor, a sentiment I completely agree with After all, it’s not like Star Wars has ever shied away from the boogie.
