Fantasy Flight Games to produce Star Wars card, roleplaying, and miniatures games

Fantasy Flight Games has picked up the dormant license to produce Star Wars roleplaying, card, and miniature games.

The license was previously held by by Hasbro’s Wizards of the Coast, which let it go in 2010. Star Wars roleplaying and card games originated under West End Games and Decipher, respectively, but from what I’ve heard over the years, WOTC’s versions suffered when compared to the much-beloved originals.

Fantasy Flight is launching their Star Wars line with a miniature game, X-Wing, and Star Wars: The Card Game.

  1. This could be a good sign – Fantasy Flight makes some pretty good (and popular) games. The Star Wars card game seems like a change from earlier SW card games – going co-op.

Maybe some of our Gencon-attending members will get a chance to demo these games…

  2. This could be a decent turn as far as roleplaying goes. I personally like a lot about the d20 stuff that was released under Wizards of the Coast, and I’ve always found Fantasy Flight’s combat rules kind of cumbersome, but their books and systems are usually second to none when it comes to comprehensiveness. Card games? Don’t know. Haven’t seriously played card games since middle school. A miniatures game built around starfighter combat could be worth checking out, though. Especially if it’s halfway tactical.

  3. I have to admit, if FF do produce a Star Wars RPG, it’ll have to be very good to win me over. WotC’s Saga Edition (that is, the final d20 edition) was a lot of fun, even if it wasn’t perfect, and it’s grown on me in a way I don’t think many RPGs could.

Of course, maybe that’s because I enjoy running regular character building contests on the WotC forums ([shamelessplug]http://community.wizards.com/go/thread/view/75862/27148421/You_Build_the_Character[/shamelessplug]).

  4. while WOTC’s d20 game was not bad, WOTC’s card game was dreadful as they aimed for the Pokemon/Dragonball set instead of the existing SW:CCG player base… there was a reason Star Wars Trading Card Game was nicknamed WOTC Yahtzee.
