Real Men Love the Fifth Element?

Multipass! Not just men… The more I see it, the more I realize that The Fifth Element is really one of the most underrated post-SW sci-fi movies. And it’s now ten years old! So much was made of The Matrix as the ‘heir to Star Wars,’ but TFE is the movie that truly captured the ‘sci-fi is fun!’ aesthetic of A New Hope. (And it didn’t even need sequels!)

And also, Bruce Willis getting his shit wrecked by Ian Holm is indeed awesome.

Possible Half-Blood Prince casting

Stuart Townsend, Joseph Fiennes and Naomi Watts in Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince? Now given there’s not a single legitimate source involved yet it’s far from certain, but folks are speculating Watts for Narcissa Malfoy, Fiennes for Tom Riddle Senior (ha ha!) and several parts for Townsend, most of which he seems to be too young for. (Rufus Scrimgeour? Fenrir Greyback?)

Warning: Don’t expect the comments at the link to be spoiler-free for Deathly Hallows.

Lucasfilm on Indy post-IV: Interweb Rumor

According to the folks at Cinematical.com, Lucasfilm has denied having plans for furthering the Indiana Jones franchise after Indy IV, saying that such talk about a three-film contract for Harrison Ford and a four-film contract for Shia LeBeouf are just Internet rumor. In response, IESB.net, which broke the story, has fired back against the charges that it’s nothing but rumor..

Also, Kathleen Kennedy and Frank Marshall speak about about filming in Hawaii and whether Harrison can still fit into his IndyWare.

Wait, seriously?

Remember all those rumors about an X-Files movie maybe, possibly being made sometime soon? Turns out that it’s kinda true. Apparently, a script has been written and both Anderson and Duchovny are on board. Filming would begin this November, so it would be out for summer of next year.

Jackson to direct The Hobbit?

Has the cold day in hell arrived?

“Never say never,” hints New Line Cinema co-founder and co-chairman Robert Shaye about the possibility of Peter Jackson returning to direct The Hobbit.

“There’s nothing I can really talk about except to say that I believe ‘The Hobbit’ will be made,” says Shaye, choosing his words carefully like the lawyer that he is. “There’s a bunch of issues and elements that have to be addressed.”

Hmm… still not holding my breath.

Movies: Remakes, superheroes and trailers

Forget the Potterdammrung: Footloose and Bill and Ted remakes? This can’t end well.

hp-ootp.jpgHarry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix made $12 million from Wednesday’s midnight openings, busting Return of the King’s previous record of $8 million. Who knows how much cash the weekend will bring… Also from Variety: Will book/movie synergy work for Potter? I don’t doubt it.

More Potter

Midnight showings of Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix have reportedly netted Warner Brothers $12 million. Not bad for a Tuesday night.

And Salon talks to screenwriter Michael Goldenberg about the daunting task of adapting OotP to the big screen. (Thanks to Hollywdliz for the head’s up).
