GateGeek – Atlantis Fall-Out

So a great hue and cry has gone up from the ranks of fans with much anger directed at both SciFi and MGM for cancelling Atlantis.  And there are the inevitable sites going up as the fans work through the grief process.  However, the producers are saying that it was a mutual decision in order to launch the Stargate Atlantis movies while the brand was still strong.

Joe Mallozzi shares that the cast and crew were told before word leaked out.  (A bit of a rarity, in this day and age.)  And he also shares that the 100th and last episode will not be a cliffhanger, as previously reported, but should leave us wanting more.

David Hewlett Twittered that he’s a bit bummed, but is philosophical about the actor’s life.  No official word, yet, from the other main actors.

On the happier side of Stargate news, although the producers aren’t yet acknowledging it, The Hollywood Reporter is saying that the new series Stargate Universe has been greenlighted.  (Although anytime someone in Hollywood says “younger vibe,” I get nervous.)  So…new series and movies from the prior ones!

And tonight’s episode, The Shrine, is getting huge buzz as being one of the most moving of the series.

It should be an interesting Dragon*Con next weekend!

Bujold Guest Blogs – New Vorkosigan Confirmed Again

Bibliophile and (former?) Stargate Atlantis producer Joe Mallozzi recently convinced Lois McMaster Bujold to come answer questions on his blog after her book Cordelia’s Honor was selected as one of his Books of the Month. (A large percentage of CJers are rather insane for this woman’s writing.)

Interesting insights into the Vorkosigan and Chalion sagas. And she confirmed, again, that she’s working on another Vorkosigan book for 2010. Yays!

GateGeek – So long, Atlantis, and thanks for the Wraith

The ugly rumors racing around the net yesterday have turned out to be true:  Stargate Atlantis will end its run with its fifth season.

Even though the “+7” numbers (live viewings, plus DVRs, etc.) have consistently run higher, SciFi apparently prefers its “live” numbers to be the deciding factor.  And Stargate has never been good at that.  (Thanks a lot, techno-geeks!)

We can comfort ourselves with movies on the way to wrap up the cliff-hanger and bring us a few more adventures.  And there are lots of intriguing projects from the cast and the production company in the pipeline.  But don’t be surprised to see another fan campaign start up, either.  Not that SciFi has ever responded to that….

JadeCon ’08 – The Quote Menace

It’s Sunday morning and we’re starting the Post-Con Depression Kick-Off Breakfast.  Once again, it appears we were foiled by actually having fun (and those annoyingly addictive Olympics) and prevented from blogging.  Since clean-up is about to begin, I thought I’d capture the remaining quotes from the weekend that were taped on to the wood-paneled wall with painter’s tape.  (We won’t cause any duct tape damage this year!)  We might have some good quotes from PCD Breakfast, but we’ll be too depressed to capture them.

The JadeCon ’08 Quotes — So Far

As is our tradition, Club Jade often comes up with silly profound quotes that are recorded for posterity. And also, as per tradition, we rarely explain the context but, rather, let them stand on their own:

  • I love this sport. What is it? – Luci re men’s synchronized diving
  • I’m famous in Germany, like David Hasselhoff – Caitlin
  • Let’s face it, they swim upstream but they don’t spawn – The Emperor, re Chinese athletes

  • Does anyone have an issues with butt crack on vinyl? – Diane randomly bursts out in the middle of the Emperor’s writing seminar

Yes. We’re still alive

We’ve been having so much fun at JadeCon ’08 that we just haven’t even gone near the nifty computer provided to the suite by the hotel. (And an iPod. The Hyatt has gone high-tech.)

Games Night was a blast. As usual, the most simple game got the most participation. It was a cross between Pictionary and The Operator Game. Hard to explain, but tons of fun.

We’ve also been quite obsessed with the Olympics; watching the “pretty boys fall down.” Cheering for the countries we feel aren’t getting enough cheerleading support. Yelling on Michael Phelps. (Like he needs our help.) Mocking others.

Those who were capable of staying up late went to see Clone Wars at midnight at the mall across the street. I haven’t heard their reviews, as yet. Everyone in CJ knows I’m entirely incapable of staying up late, so no reviews from me!

Project Runway (Vinyl Version) has begun with the first challenge. Spotted so far is a zebra pattern pimp hat, a leopard skin tuxedo and other outfits that we can’t describe on this page because it’s PG. (Parental Guidance PG; not Her Wonderfulness PG.)

We’re also enjoying the presence of Rox’s working dog Willow who has been put to more work feeding the dog cravings of the CJ dog lovers. She is rarely without two people petting her and rubbing her belly. I hope Rox doesn’t actually need her, at some point.

We’re about to head out to the Sith Ascension Picnic. Games and the trials of the CJ padawans will commence.

We’ll catch up on the fandom happenings next week. Those CJers not with us, feel free to leave us messages here. We’ll pass them along.

GateGeek – Weekend Goodness

You might have heard of a little shindig over the weekend called Comic-Con.  There was some Stargate representation.

Not to be outdone by events in San Diego, Joe Mallozzi’s blog features some fun entries:

  • Joe telling us all about his thinking (and some missing pieces) in last Friday’s episode Broken Ties
  • Rob Cooper braves some not-always-nice questions from fen about Stargate SG1.

Gate Geek – Things to do while NOT at Comic-Con

In order to keep with the Comic-Con theme, I will actually start out with news from Comic-Con. Then I’ll go to stuff to entertain those of us not there, this week. (Not that I’m bitter, or anything.)

  • Stargate Continuum had its world premiere on Thursday. On the deck of a carrier. (How cool is that?)
  • Not to be outdone, Joe Mallozzi counterprograms with a guest appearance on his blog by VFX guru (and Emmy nominee) Mark Savela. Cool pictures and he brings clips!
  • GateWorld waits for Friday’s Stargate panels by posting an interview with the great Robert Picardo. A wee bit on the spoilery side, but Picardo’s just so much fun.
  • The official site posts a story about last week’s episode in which Jewel Staite talks about the joys of living in a latex cage for four days.
  • And, finally, Alex Levine gets Joe Mallozzi to share some of his excitement about tonight’s episode, Broken Ties. Jason Mamoa apparently gives a performance not to be missed.

Jamie Bamber Sheds a Tear

E!’s Watch with Kristin spoke to BSG’s Jamie Bamber about the oddness of closing out Battlestar’s run on a second unit shoot.  But he also admits that tears were shed at the read-through.  (Interpret as you will.)

He also shares some about his future with BSG and the upcoming Law & Order – London.  (Complete with cute accent.)
