Everything comics at StarWars.com today. Firstly, the Invasion preview is up and running. Secondly, the August 2009 comic solicitations, including Invasion #2 (of 5?!?) The Clone Wars #8, Dark Times #16, Knights of the Old Republic #44, and Legacy #39.
Sound off at StarWars.com
There’s a new feature at the official site today: Star Wars Soundboards. I eagerly await to see who will recreate NIN’s ‘Closer’ with Ewok and Jawa sounds.
EUbits: The Clone Wars art book, Essential Atlas skips back again, Bohnhoff on Dash
First look: StarWars.com gives us a peek at The Art of Star Wars: The Clone Wars. I continue to wince at the appropriation of McQuarrie art in the name of designs based on those awful puppets. (Not that people were exactly Ralph’s greatest either, but if one must choose…) Your mileage may vary, but this is probably one Art of I’ll be sitting out for.
- Street date shuffle: The Essential Atlas has been moved back to August 18. Only a month this time!
- The blogside. Maya Kaathryn Bohnhoff considers Dash Rendar in her latest Padawan’s Journal.
- Interviews: EUC is taking questions for their interview with Invasion’s Colin Wilson and Tom Taylor.
Star Wars in the news: George hopes to add to his empire… And more Trek
Every building should have an 85-foot tower or two. George Lucas and company are looking to build a 262,728-square-foot digital film production studio in Marin County.
There’s just no avoiding it. Thank god that the Houston Chronicle is here to tell us that Star Wars and Star Trek fans are “galactically different.” Though for how long? Luckily Simon Pegg has given us permission to like both. Phew.
Yeah, I don’t get it either. Reporter initially shocked, but finds hope in the fact that people are still buying collectibles in the recession.
Cheap shots: My Little Pony, the movie
Guys, I think that this ‘trailer’ will recreate for you the ‘Are you kidding me’ effect I felt watching Transformers. Of course, the ponies don’t talk, so YMMV.
Star Trek release only hours away
Star Trek reviews are starting to flow in, and the Tomatometer has dropped to a stunning 93%. Huh.
- But Ebert was not blown away. (Though I doubt anyone will get ranty at him for it.) However, both my local guy Tom Long and Entertainment Weekly’s Owen Gleiberman are both impressed.
- Burger King’s Trek-themed ads are awesomely bizarre.
- Five reasons to love Kirk, and six Trek technologies that are already here.
- Spock artwork made from spools of thread.
- John Scalzi recaps the previous Trek movies in haiku form.
Twelve geeky Barbie dolls, but no Star Wars
Topless Robot lists off the 12 greatest Barbie dolls for nerds, including multiple Treks. Who better to wear those short skirts?
As we’ve already addressed many times, I’m the furthest thing there is from a collecting expert, but I don’t think we’ve ever seen a legitimate Star Wars Barbie produced. (Somehow I doubt Kenner or Hasbro even allowed Mattel to think about it.) Which is really a pity, considering how many outfits the prequels produced. And yes, there is Sideshow, but there’s just something about Barbie, in all her opiate-of-the-masses glory.
Important questions: Space opera or military sci-fi?
io9 asks What’s the difference between space opera and military sci-fi? I won’t tell you their answer, but mine involves the fact that straight military sci-fi almost always bores me to death. You?
The fandom minute: Star Wars weddings, Faison geeks out, sneakers and crime
Do you take this fan… Two Star Wars weddings made it on the internet this week! The first, in the UK, featuring a full party of costumed guests. The second, in the Philippines, features a stormtrooper-inspired gown, at right… And lightsabers. Naturally.
- Celeb fans: Donald Faison’s Chronicles of Lando Calrissian.
- Shoes: Geekdad’s Dave Banks dreams up some Star Wars Converses. (Conversi?)
- Mockery: The mighty Y-Wing, a pictorial essay.
- Lists: Crime Library takes a look at Star Wars-inspired wrongdoers (and rampant stupidity.)
Simon Pegg on Trek/Wars…
Time Out New York puts Star Trek actor but Star Wars fan Simon Pegg on the Hot Seat, and he opines that the Trek franchise has maintained its integrity while Star Wars hasn’t. Maybe he just didn’t see Star Trek V, or Insurrection? Then again, with the holodeck on The Next Generation, he voices that it jumped the shark there. Anyway, only one more day until the release of Star Trek…
