What Oscar Isaac wants as Poe’s homeworld, the rumor mill resurrects ‘Joss Whedon for Star Wars’

tfa-poe-smallToday, in sequel trilogy ‘news’ that really isn’t… Oscar Isaac expressed an opinion on what planet he would like Poe Dameron to be from, which some news sites immediately took as fact. Nope! Just wishful thinking on Isaac’s part – really, if it was true, or if his homeworld was actually something that came up in the film, would he just up and tell the AP like that? Logic! It’s a hell of thing.

Isaac was also asked if he was related to Jimmy Smits’ Bail Organa, to which he (rightfully) replied “there’s room in the Galaxy for more than one Latin family.”

And then the Joss Whedon thing has reared up again, because of course it has. Quite frankly, after comments he’s made recent about how exhausting Avengers: Age of Ultron was, I can’t see him signing up for another big franchise movie for a while. And by ‘a while’ I mean ‘not this trilogy.’ Let the guy have a break.

Roundup: Bind matter, create lightsabers? Science!

SCIENCE! Physicists have discovered “photonic molecules,” which could allow something like a lightsaber to really exist. “When these photons interact with each other, they’re pushing against and deflect each other,” Harvard Professor of Physics Mikhail Lukin says. “The physics of what’s happening in these molecules is similar to what we see in the movies.” Lukin and his colleague, MIT Professor of Physics Vladan Vuletic, have published their findings in the scientific journal Nature.

Episode VII. IMAX CEO tells IMAX investors that they’re “talking to J.J. Abrams” about filming the new Star Wars in IMAX. Alrighty then.

Whedon. Entertainment Weekly asks Joss Whedon if he’d turn down a Boba Fett movie if offered. “I can’t say for sure, because that’s a tasty morsel,” he answered. “But right now my heart doesn’t go that way.” Ugh. Lucasfilm, if you ever do decide to call up Joss Whedon, please don’t waste him on a Boba Fett movie.

Firefly returning to comics, teases Dark Horse

Dark Horse Comics teased Serenity fans for #FireflyFriday with a ‘watch-this-space’ post for the #WheresSerenity? hashtag. Then they followed up with animated gif going from a sketch to the shot above – see the animatedness in its full size glory on BigShinyRobot.com.

Looking at the copyright block, you’ll notice that this is for a Firefly title and not a Serenity title (as they have done in the past), which means that hopefully these stories will take place in the time frame of the TV show, licensed from Fox, and not in the movie-and-beyond time frame that the Serenity license from Universal granted. The Serenity: Firefly Class 03-K64 title was used on the 2012 Free Comic Book Day story, written by Zack Whedon. Will they be rebooting the ‘Verse to have a couple of seasons of material, like has been done with Buffy the Vampire Slayer and Angel? Or will it all still fit into the established time line. No doubt Dark Horse was gauging fans’ opinions at the Star Wars vs Serenity panel they hosted at Comic-Con in San Diego.

Joss Whedon not a fan of Empire’s cliffhanger

The geek legend and Entertainment Weekly’s latest cover model says that The Empire Strikes Back “committed the cardinal sin of not actually ending.”

To which your EW interviewer blurted: “You think Empire had a bad ending?”

“Well, it’s not an ending,” Whedon explained about the 1980 film, which had a cliffhanger leading into the next entry of the series, Return of the Jedi. “It’s a Come Back Next Week, or in three years. And that upsets me. I go to movies expecting to have a whole experience. If I want a movie that doesn’t end I’ll go to a French movie. That’s a betrayal of trust to me. A movie has to be complete within itself, it can’t just build off the first one or play variations.”

So I guess we can trust that The Avengers sequel won’t have stop on a cliffhanger?

Trailer park special edition: Fall’s new genre shows

The TV stations held their upfronts last week, giving advertisers (and viewers) their first look at fall’s new shows. So your first trailer park of the week is devoted to genre and genre-ajacent TV show trailers.

Up top, the biggest gun: Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. from Joss Whedon and the Disney/Marvel conglomerate, coming at you on ABC, Tuesdays at 8:00. And yes, there is already a push to abbreviate this as MAoS, so pass it on.

Note that yes, some of these are spoiling their show’s first episode, but love it or leave it, their main purpose is to sell ads.

Roundup: Whedon says Star Wars should “move forward,” Billy Dee is up for a return

whedonWhat if? When asked about the Star Wars standalone films by Digital Spy Joss Whedon says he wouldn’t bring back the original trilogy characters like, as rumored, Han Solo and Boba Fett. Yeah, I’m with him on that: These standalone options we’ve thus heard are by far the weakest part of this whole new era for me.

Actors. Billy Dee Williams told attendees at Emerald City Comic Con that he hasn’t been approached for Episode VII, but that he’d be all for it. Meanwhile, Zoe Saldana wants in. “I want to be a sexy something, like a princess from another planet,” she told E! at the Oscars.

Expect this to continue. In perhaps an effort to keep Star Wars from overtaking the press cycle for Star Trek Into Darkness, J.J. Abrams said it’s “too early” to talk about Episode VII. Diplomatic, but are people going to stop asking? Probably not.

Episode VII roundup: Being smart about the rumors

SEQUEL TRILOGY RUMORS: Take seriously at your own risk.Practice safe media. Amy Ratcliffe writes about Star Wars rumors (like Monday’s Zack Snyder-fest) and how some movie news sites report them. I am in 100% in agreement with her plee for fans to “use your noodle.”

We report rumors, yes. Do I believe them all? Of course not. Hell, in a previous round, I got so angry at people misusing the term ‘confirmed’ that I wrote a whole post about it. The internet is a crazy place and things spread like wildfire, but please, please please be smart about these things. The rumors aren’t going to be going away any time soon, no matter how hard you wish they would.

Sorry, nerds. Joss Whedon totally wanted to direct Episode VII but, you know, The Avengers 2. And S.H.I.E.L.D. Damn his hard-earned success!

Oh, and… The guy who directed Looper says “it would be very hard to say no to.”. Okay.

“This deal is getting worse all the time.” Harvey Weinstein offered Kathleen Kennedy an Oscar (for Lincoln) if she cast him as a stormtrooper.

Star Wars: The Empire Strikes Back of fan bases?

Or is it Attack of the Clones? Well, I suppose that depends on your certain point of view…

Earlier this week, Vulture posted a massive list of what they’re calling the most influential fan bases, and Star Wars came in number 2 – pretty good, all things considered. Occupying the #1 spot is Game of Thrones, which I can’t really be all that bitter about seeing as they’re peaking right now. (And, well, I’m a fan, if not technically in the fandom.)

It’s an interesting series, but one major qualm with the Star Wars listing: Warsies? Dude, no one with an actual clue uses that term. It’s not even a Trekker/Trekkie situation: No one uses it.

The Harry Potter, Doctor Who, Star Trek, Joss Whedon and Lord of the Rings fandoms also made the list. It’s all part of a week-long series, which also covers things like naming your fandom (don’t,) psychology and the crazy shit fans buy.

They’ve also profiled several influential fans, including the Leaky Cauldron’s Melissa Anelli, The One Ring’s Erica Challis and TFN’s Dustin Roberts.
