The Force Awakens catchup: Puns are incoming, but news?

It's a parody! So soon after Celebration, we’re not expecting any reveals for May the 4th this year – maybe an official announcement of the poster that’s been spotted around? That Italian ‘star’ map that’s floating around is only a parody, so don’t put a huge amount of stock in it.

→ Missed in all the Celebration hubbub (well, I tweeted it) was this nice article from the BBC’s Lizo Mzimba, where Kathleen Kennedy talks about some of The Force Awaken’s casting choices. Kennedy and Daisy Ridley also made an appearance in Japan, but nothing particularly groundbreaking has come out of it. Lots of pictures, though.

→ Jedi News discovered some The Force Awakens merchandise. It’s all fairly tacky kid-oriented stuff, because of course that’s what’s going to leak first.

→ Star Wars Underworld points out a Ralph McQuarrie influenced detail from the Celebration Anaheim TFA exhibit.

→ Spoiler corner: Making Star Wars has a few bits on a scene late in the film and Han Solo’s emotional state.

Fisher, Ridley and Boyega on The Force Awakens

ridley-boyega-ewThe latest Entertainment Weekly has a spread on The Force Awakens. You can read the print article here, but they’ve also been posting expanded interviews with some of the cast.

So far we have Carrie Fisher, who called herself “the custodian of Leia” and reveals that her part in one of the sequel drafts “wasn’t what I thought Leia should be.” Then Daisy Ridley, in what may be her first major Star Wars interview. And today, we heard from John Boyega.

No Oscar Isaac yet, but he did do a nice interview with IGN where he revealed some of the research he did for the part.

Yes, we saw a new trailer for The Force Awakens!

J.J. Abrams and Kathleen Kennedy’s “special guests” included the new trio – Daisy Ridley, John Boyega and Oscar Isaac – who confirmed some of what we’d already heard and/or guessed about their characters. We also got to see the (real!) BB-8 and Artoo, plus their makers, and of course Anthony Daniels, Carrie Fisher, Mark Hamill and Peter Mayhew also showed up. I’ll be back later with more, but for now just keep an eye on @clubjade, where I’ve been far more active than on the blog. (Sorry!)

In the meantime, you can backwatch the panel yourself!

And another video that StarWars.com dropped on us today:

Here’s just the BB-8 portion of the livestream:

The Force Awakens character names revealed!

Lucasfilm and Entertainment Weekly have paired up to give us character names from The Force Awakens – in trading card form. Daisy Ridley is Rey, John Boyega is Finn and Oscar Isaac plays Poe Dameron. The ball droid is BB-8 (which I’m guessing is pronounced/abbreviated as ‘Bebe,’) and our mysterious villain is Kylo Ren. The card numbers have some significance as well – a mystery to chew on… In addition to Finn and Rey’s last names.

This also puts to bed a popular theory that Gwendoline Christie could be playing the character we now know as Kylo Ren, referring to “his lightsaber.”

UPDATE: One fan has already done the matchwork: Rey, Poe and BB line up nicely, Kylo not so much… Unless… Threepio?!?

This weekend in Episode VII: Wrap party!

artoo-boyega-wrapAlthough there are some rumblings that filming isn’t quite done for all, Saturday night was the wrap party for Episode VII. John Boyega posted a photo with Artoo and a video to his Instagram, and later shared another from the party. Naturally, the paparazzi were there. (Yes, Simon Pegg was there, so get ready for another round of ‘does he have a role?!?‘)

And you can get a closer look at the Artoo – presumably the same one used during the filmng – at Indie Revolver.
