Wear Star Wars, Share Star Wars on December 16th

Remember last year when the Star Wars community rallied around Katie in Chicago who was bullied for liking Star Wars? Everyone wore Star Wars and was encouraged to donate a Star Wars toy in her honor.

We’re going to do it again this year! Friday, December 16th is the day to wear Star Wars in some sort of capacity.

Fans are also encouraged to donate a Star Wars toy to a charity (labeled as “either boy OR girl”).  If you’d like to really keep it in the Star Wars family, the 501st is a big supporter of Toys for Tots.

Exclusive interview with Catherine Taber on The Clone Wars and The Old Republic

For Star Wars fans, Catherine Taber is best known as the voice of Senator Padmé Amidala on The Clone Wars, though she first got her start in voice acting working on different Star Wars video games. Taber provided the voice for a new character, Vette, for the upcoming Star Wars: The Old Republic game, and recently was heard as a tactical droid in The Clone Wars episode ‘Shadow Warrior’. She was kind enough to answer our interview questions about her work on The Clone Wars and The Old Republic, as well as talk about her Games for Soldiers project.

VW’s Kid Vader tops Adweek‘s best of 2011

December is nearly here, and with it come the 2011 best-of lists. Our first Star Wars sighting is Volkswagon’s Kid Vader commercial, which makes it to #1 on Adweek’s 10 Best Commercials of 2011.

“The spot, while visually strong, isn’t a wonder of craft or technique. It’s a triumph of fun, unadorned storytelling, which clearly goes a long way,” Tom Nudd writes.

Also making the lists are Snickers’ shark focus group, Cravendale dairy’s viral hit ‘Cats with Thumbs,’ and Eminem’s Chrysler 200 spot.

Our next major release will be James Luceno’s Darth Plagueis on January 10. This one also has a recent mini-excerpt.

The quick guide to Anne McCaffrey’s Pern novels (by someone who hasn’t read them in years)

When we heard the news that Anne McCaffrey had died earlier this week, I found myself unexpectedly effected by it. For several years in my childhood and teens, Pern was one of my chief obsessions. I think that if I had run across Pern fans instead of Star Wars fans when I got online at 17, I might be running a very different kind of SF/F blog.

But instead, I gave up on following the series in 2001, after what I thought were several lackluster books. I can’t in good conscience recommend any of the recent Pern books, as I haven’t read them (and was actually shocked at just how many there are now!) But, for anyone who wants a grounding in the series, here are my recommendations. Continue reading “The quick guide to Anne McCaffrey’s Pern novels (by someone who hasn’t read them in years)”

Dark Horse teams up Star Wars, Firefly and Zack Whedon for Free Comic Book Day

No, it’s not a crossover, sadly. But you do get two-in-one: A Han and Chewbacca story shares a flip book with the Serenity folks, both tales penned by Zack Whedon (he co-wrote Dr. Horrible’s Sing-Along Blog with brothers Joss and Jed.) And Dark Horse will offer another flip book with Buffy the Vampire Slayer and The Guild. (via)

Free Comic Book is, as always, the first Saturday in May: This year, that means May 5, 2012. You’ll be able to find a participating comic shop near you with the Comic Shop Locator.
