Celebration VI: The Bounty Hunt is back, and the Collectors get social

Clues! The Bounty Hunt is returning back to Celebration. You know the one. Hint: It’s run by Jaders.

Collectors. Star Wars Action News is sponsoring the Collector’s Social Area, which “gives Star Wars collectors the opportunity to network with other Star Wars collectors, learn more about the collecting hobby, and get autographs from authors of books on collecting.” Sounds like the Fan Club lounge… Remember that from CIV? Great for collectors, but I can’t help but wondering why no other areas of fandom ever get an official track, let alone a social area. (Do we have to – gulp – volunteer?)

EUbits: To Crucible or not to Crucible?

Crucible The upcoming post-Fate of the Jedi is on everyone’s mind. Roqoo Depot’s Skuldren takes a look at Scoundrel’s Luck, the 1990 WEG gaming adventure that author Troy Denning hinted holds a clue to the book’s villain. Meanwhile, Nanci at Tosche Station – not exactly Denning’s chief cheerleader – implores burned fans to give Crucible a chance.

I myself remain rather ambivalent on the book, but I can pretty much guarantee I’ll read it. Or try to, anyway, which is more than I can say for the other SDCC announcements.

The blogside, pro edition. Over at the Star Wars Blog, Leland Chee explains the Holocron, while Jonathan Rinzler introduces himself and writes about interviewing George Lucas. And this morning, Pablo Hidalgo gives us a tour of the new Insider

Nonfiction. The new book by super-collectors Gus Lopez and Duncan Jenkins, Gus and Duncan’s Guide to Star Wars Prototypes, will be available in August.

Interviews. John Jackson Miller chats with the Wisconsin State Journal about Star Wars and his new book.

Chat. There’ll be a Twitter chat with Tom Taylor on Thursday.

Charity. EUCantina is selling t-shirts for their A Force for Childhood Literacy program.

Mary Poppins to face Voldemort at the Olympics?

A British newspaper is reporting that a 40-foot He-Who-Must-Not-Be-Named and Mary Poppins – among other noted characters of British literature – will be featured in the Opening Ceremonies of the London Olympics on Friday. The Sunday Times writes:

About 30 actors each depicting Mary Poppins, the magical English nanny played by Julie Andrews in the 1964 Disney film, will descend from the roof of the stadium on wires and “float” to the ground with their opened umbrellas. The nightmare will be banished and happiness restored. “It’s a jaw-dropping sequence,” said one source.

If this is true, it’s going to be completely batshit. I hope it’s true.

In other news, I hear they’ve reached out for some rather unorthodox help in other areas.

Remembering Sally Ride, first American woman in space

Today we say goodbye to a woman who inspired many, if not all of us, in Club Jade.

You can read about her life on her wiki page, her science education company website, or any of the regular news outlets.

Yes, she contributed to science, to the space shuttle program, and to science education.  You’ll read about those at the sites above.

However, it’s the stories you will not read as part of the official record that are the most important when it comes to the impact Sally Ride had on the hearts and minds of children growing up in the 80’s through today.

Club Jade’s own Paula tweeted earlier today:

I had the honor of meeting Sally Ride when I was twelve. She encouraged me to pursue science so I could follow her to the stars.

My earliest memory of Sally Ride was seeing her picture on a wall in a classroom, with the simple note of “First American Woman in Space – 1983”.  My first report in that class was on her because of that picture and caption and it made me a fan for life.  I wanted to go to space camp, I was driven to learn more about science and technology, and I was absolutely empowered to never let anyone tell me “girls can’t do X”.  All because of Sally’s example.  Thank you Sally Ride, for giving so many of us young girls an example of what we too could achieve.

I’d like to invite you to share how she impacted your life, no matter how small, in the comments below.

Out this week: Lost Tribe collection, new Insider

Of course this week brings a glut of Star Wars stuff. Of course. First up, on Tuesday, is Lost Tribe of the Sith: The Collected Stories… All John Jackson Miller’s Fate of the Jedi tie-ins stories that you may have read for free over the course of the series, plus a new one and, I hear, some maps.

It’s also the time to start keeping an eye out for Star Wars Insider #135, which includes Karen Miller’s Myri Antilles story, a tie in to next month’s Mercy Kill.

On Wednesday, get your fill of mostly-silent fanboy-favorite grunters with Blood Ties: Boba Fett Is Dead #4 and Darth Maul: Death Sentence #1.

Etsy scavenger: Jewelry, accessories and more

Time to start thinking about all the trimmings for Celebration VI… We already know all the official stuff that will be on the ground there, so why not gather up some fanmade accessories to impress the crowds with now?

Hat. This R2-D2 fleece hat ($19) is by Akiseo Accessories. They also have a Boba Fett and numerous options inspired by other fandoms and national flags.

Necklaces. May the Force Be With You ($12) by McMakin Designs is one of several; The Wookiee Inspired Polymer Clay Necklace ($22) is byRapscallion Design – check the shop for more Star Wars! The Rebel Necklace (£5/$8) is by ZABZU; The Vintage C3PO ($25) from Liam & Leia is interesting… But what you really want to check out is the Hand Formed Death Star from Griffin’s Nest Jewelry. At $117.89 it’s the priciest selection here and merely aspirational, but well worth a look. For cheaper options they make a Death Star Pandora Style Bead ($84.98) and a Darth Vader ($63.98.)

Hairstuffs. The Wide Headband ($8.99) is by Mrawp Shop; The Scarf Tie Headband ($9) is by Melrowe and the Retro Comic Bow ($5) is from Geeky Gamer Shop.

Couple stuff. His and Hers? The I Love You/I Know bracelets ($25) or the Princess/Scoundrel set by Spiffing Jewelry may fit the bill. You’ve already seen the rings, I’m sure.

Dude, or at least not specifically girly, stuff. Darth Vader belt buckle by Idillard is one of several; There Is No Try, by One Eyed Fox , is another metal bracelet, for those flying solo, or go leather with a May the Force Be With You braided wristband ($17.50) by Leather Made Nice. Or get a new wallet for the occasion… The Leather Yoda ($90.00) by World of Leathercraft (Also has Fett, Ackbar) or keep it on the cheap with one made of duct tape, like the Jedi or logo ($10) options by Moist Snail Poop.
