Beware the trademarks!

Richard Stevens of Diesel Sweeties, who has been selling Star Wars themed t-shirts for a few years now, recieved a Cease & Desist from Lucasfilm. Comic Journal blog Journalista gives a good analysis of the situation. (via Digg)

I think it’s worth saying that Lucasfilm is well within their rights to do this kind of thing: fandom is not entitled to make money off someone else’s property, something fanfic folks are well aware of, but occasionally let slide when it comes to other areas. Overall, Star Wars fandom has has been very, very lucky in our dealings with the Powers-That-Be, at least for the last decade or so. They’re not exactly mowing down everyone in sight, remember?

Buh-bye, Andy

We interrupt the exciting news about Helen’s upcoming book to break some sad (and probably not-so-surprising) news to the Durannies who frequent this page:

Andy Taylor is leaving Duran Duran.

Again.

I remember listening to an appearance of Andy and Simon on a local Atlanta radio station and Andy was none-too-pleasant. Simon sounded like he was rather exhausted trying to cover up for him.

I’m impressed they made it five years! And Duran Duran with Timbaland? Could be kinda cool…

Okay. Back to your regularly-scheduled geekdom.

Pumpkin time!

Almost Halloween, time for the annual pumpkin-carving post… Alas, our old favorite, Zombie Pumpkins has gone for paid membership this year, although unlimited access does go for as little as $2. There are a tone of great stencils to choose from, including Star Wars, Buffy, and Pirates of the Carribean.

But the geek community moves ever on, and this year’s hot custom pumpkins include the Daleks, Cylons, a pirate, and even an actual PC. MAKE and CRAFT have even set up a contest and a Flickr pool for geek-ready pumpkins.
