Gate Geek – Jack’s Back!

This week is the biggest Stargate convention of the year:  Creation’s Stargate con in Vancouver.  So it stands to reason we’ll be getting lots of fun tidbits via GateWorld.

Best of all is the news from producer Brad Wright that Jack (Richard Dean Anderson) will be appearing in Stargate Universe!

Gary Jones has also confirmed that everyone’s favorite Chevron-counter, Walter, will be appearing.

And rumors (totally con-based rumors…and you know how those get) are swirling that Michael Shanks (Daniel Jackson) and Amanda Tapping (Sam Carter) are also appearing because they suddenly had to push back their appearance at the con for filming.  (Probably have to nix at least Amanda on that one.  Sanctuary is currently in production.  And Michael is doing a pilot.  But I’ll take it, if it’s true!)

Either way, you can catch all of these folks tonight (Friday) on Sci-Fi SyFy as Stargate takes over this Friday with airings of The Ark of Truth and Continuum.  (If you haven’t seen Continuum, watch.  It’s a really good one!)

Inappropriate fannish behavior du jour

A Supernatural fan asks security to remove Jensen Ackles’ girlfriend from the convention. Or at least claims to have done so on her Livejournal. Key quote:

I was actually pissed to see her sitting behind him killing my fan squee, she was a total buzz kill, I mean seriously to sit there while he is with fans was tacky IMO.

And another, from the comments:

hahaha i heard she was a bit of a cock block for fans

Bravo, ladies. Bravo. (via)

Passing away: Angel‘s Andy Hallett, film composer Maurice Jarre

We are saddened to report the passing of Maurice Jarre and Andy Hallett.

Maurice Jarre was a French film composer who won 3 Oscars for Lawrence of Arabia, Dr. Zhivago, and A Passage to India, and wrote the music for over 150 films, and was considered one of the pioneers of film scoring. He passed away on Sunday of cancer at the age of 84.

Andy Hallett was best known for his role of Lorne/The Host, a horned green demon owner of the karaoke bar on the TV show Angel, and also sang on the Angel soundtrack. He passed on Monday of heart failure at the age of 33.

Sci-fi world this-and-that…

All the news that’s flashed before my eyes:
Supergirl and Wash are being cast on the miniseries remake of V, reports io9. I think they mean Laura Vandervoort, of Smallville, and Alan Tudyk of Firefly. They’ll be joining Firefly‘s Inara Baccarin, and Lost‘s Elizabeth Mitchell. They’ll have the whole set if they can also nab any of the Star Trek alumni who also were on Heroes and any Farscape/Stargate cast member.

Speaking of Star Trek, the new movie’s executive producer, Damon Lindelof, told MTV that despite some TNG characters appearing in the movie’s official lead-in comic, there aren’t any cameos of the TNG main cast in the film, which will be 2 hours long.

With the Red Dwarf special only a few weeks away, Chris Barrie talks about Carbug in this exclusive video.

And Seven magazine takes a fresh look at the debate: Star Wars vs Star Trek: Revenge of the Sith and the Trek reboot.

Clips of Caprica: BSG meets the Matrix?

Amazon.com has this exclusive clip from Caprica, the Battlestar Galactica prequel series that will have its premiere episode on DVD/digital download on April 21, 2009, but won’t actually air as a series until 2010. Want more clips? Movieweb has seven clips available, and io9 briefly talks about them.

Meanwhile, the Washington Post looks to Battlestar Galactica for 10 business lessons. Lesson #8: Don’t store all your backups in one place.

Vulcan to get Trek pre-release screening, Red Dwarf, Terminator Salvation and more…

As the geek world turns:

Ready for the end of Battlestar Galactica?

First off, the absolute most important thing you should know tonight is that the finale runs a whopping 11 minutes over, so set your DVRs accordingly. Reviews have been mixed – Los Angeles Times’ Mary McNamara says it’s “everything a fan.. could hope for,” while the Boston Herald’s Mark A. Perigard calls it “wildly uneven.” And over at the San Francisco Chronicle, Tim Goodman asks if the BSG void can be filled, equating it to The Clone Wars in the process. Uh-huh.

From the fannish side, io9 has 12 plotholes that must be filled tonight, and Sci Fi’s DVICE reveals the winners of their Steampunk Cylon contest.

Of course, this won’t be the last we’ll see of the old Galactica: in addition to the Caprica prequel, there’s a spinoff movie directed by Edward James Olmos, The Plan, coming in the fall.
