SyFy shuffles schedule, fans gnash teeth

The SyFy ::giggle:: Channel is changing its schedule to accommodate a new deal for WWE’s Smackdown.

Yes, science fiction fans, you can now restart that RPG night you’d blown off on Friday nights to watch your favorite original science fiction programming.  The SyFy Friday slate of shows are apparently moving to Tuesdays, come this fall.

The Twitter-verse (and I’m sure many other online sites) are already in an uproar.  But Airlock Alpha seems to think this will give them the profit margin they’ll need to pay for their less-viewed original programming.

But if schedules stay the same on the main networks, that will put them up against the ratings stalwarts NCIS, NCIS: Los Angeles, American Idol and Glee.  Not entirely sure how that will help the situation.

GateWorld declares “no more” for the haters

In a move long overdue for those Stargate fans who have long avoided the Wild West atmosphere of the GateWorld forums, founder Darren Sumner is making some changes.

  • The forums will be more distinctively split between series to better coral the fans of each.
  • Moderators will be less tolerant of disrespect and those who just appear to be wanting to pick fights to see how much they can get away with.
  • Some articles will not allow comments.

As someone who ran from those boards a long time ago because of this kind of behavior, I’m glad to see this move.  Here’s hoping it’s enforced well so that people who, oh, actually like the show, can gather with others who feel the same.

Bravo, Darren!

Gate Geek: Give us another chance with SGU

Stargate Universe producer Brad Wright speaks with Show Patrol about Season 1.5 starting this Friday on SyFy.

He admits to a few mistakes, but also asks everyone to give them the chance to show what SGU can do.  Apparently we’ll be seeing a lot more of what “old time” fans loved about SG1 and SGA; including some aliens, some action and more focus on the women characters.

It would be nice to find more peace amongst the fans with a pulled-together show.  Although I’ll always think “Stargate University” when I see SGU.  (See Dragon*Con’s Stargate track for more on how my strange mind contributed to this year’s programming.)

Browncoats: Redemption is a fanfilm with a cause

Star Wars fans are familiar with the sad time of little official activity.  (Remember the Dark Times?)

So Bart tells us that some Browncoats, not ones to sit around and wait for the occasional awesome comic, are making their own story to bide the time called Browncoats:  Redemption.  In order to avoid painful imitations of beloved characters, they’re creating an all new crew.

And to keep this in the spirit of Browncoats, they’re going to be collecting for charity, including:  Equality Now, Kids Need to Read, Dyslexia Foundation, the Al Wooten Jr. Heritage Center, and the Marine Corps – Law Enforcement Foundation.

Good luck to them!

And the rest: Game of Thrones, Razzies, poor King Arthur and Futurama

Winter is actually coming. HBO must have liked the pilot for A Game of Thrones, because they ordered nine more episodes: By cable standards, that’s pretty much an entire season. Filming starts in June, and we can expect the series to debut next spring.

Shocker! Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen took the Razzies for Worst Picture, Worst Director, and Worst Screenplay. As for actual entertainment value, Sandra Bullock showed up in person to accept Worst Actress for All About Steve: If she gets an Academy Award tonight (for The Blind Side) she’ll become the first actress to win both a Razzie and an Oscar in the same year.

Nothing new under the sun. Guy Ritchie wants to remake Excalibur “in the tone of Star Wars.” There’s also something going down with Warren Ellis, and didn’t Showtime have The Tudors team signed to do a Camelot series? To all this I say: Haven’t the Arthurian legends suffered enough?

Good news, everyone! Futurama returns to its rightly place as a half-hour show in June.
