JadeCon 2009 – Day One on the books
Greetings from downtown Indianapolis, home of JadeCon and, oh yeah, a little gathering called GenCon.
This is our annual gathering of Jaders, so please forgive the lack of real world news as we enjoy each others’ company. And if there are any entries that don’t make sense to you, they do to us. (Or, at least, they did when we posted them under the influence of a Young Obi-Wan.)
Yesterday was the arrival of most of the rest of the group. As usual, there were travel delays and bleary eyes, but much happiness at seeing each other again.
Many of us headed to the gaming tables and did well. Others shopped their wallets out in the dealer’s room. Still others of us headed to the Children’s Museum to see the King Tut exhibit. They also had a small Clone Wars exhibit with macquets and drawings. We got to see George’s infamous OK stamp, as well as the slightly less infamous “Plo kool” stamp of Dave Filoni. Of more excitement to most of us were the real-life costumes for Anakin, Mace, and Padme. Thankfully no small children were injured in the perusal of this exhibit.
Last night was Games Night. A lot of bursts of laughter. A few deep discussions. Then retirement to the suite for hang time.
The suite has this great clear glass ceiling, but this spiral staircase in the middle is destined to become the source of the first JadeCon injury, I’m sure.
Today begins the seminar schedule and, shocker, another party. Life is good.
Book and canon comments from Rostoni and Chee
First up, some very good news for the Fate of the Jedi fans in the crowd. Today, editor Sue Rostoni posts:
We’re moving around some pub dates, so stay tuned. Next week I’ll be posting a blog reflecting the revised calendar. The major change is that we’ve moved some of the Fate of the Jedi novels, beginning next year, to give the authors a bit more time to write …. longer novels. We conjured up a few beefy subplots to add to the mix that are really going to increase action, tension, and characters and wanted to be sure each author has enough time to really develop and write the stories without a lot of rush.

New look for The Clone Wars with Gambit: Stealth
Granted, the cover for Karen Miller’s Clone Wars Gambit: Stealth isn’t going to blow anyone’s socks off, but it’s a vast improvement over the previous Clone Wars book covers. (Interesting that the title, design and artwork all seem to be downplaying the cartoon connection.) Lest I forget, this also gives us our first official blurb for the book:
Obi-Wan Kenobi and Anakin Skywalker are on a secret mission to one of the many worlds caught in the middle of the struggle between the Republic and the Separatists. A pastoral planet, Lanteeb wants only to be left alone to survive — but it is the source of what could be one of the most devastatingly destructive weapons ever. On Jossing, canon, and The Clone Wars
Can’t say I’m particularly broken up about the departure of Karen Traviss from Star Wars, as I wasn’t planning to read any of her forthcoming novels anyway. However, I’ve been following the threads on the fan boards and in-between the mourning/celebration some interesting points have been raised: How far is The Clone Wars going in railroading over existing canon, if it’s driven away an author who infamously loved to retcon? Sorry: That’s not Hamill in The Clone Wars S2 trailer
While the theory and reasoning why are intriguing, according to the IMHFC, Mark Hamill is not voicing a Mandalorian leader in season two of ‘The Clone Wars’ or in the trailer for it.
The Clone Wars guest voice theories abound
So last night on the ForceCast, they were theorizing that Jon Favreau was voicing one of the mystery Mandalorians we saw in The Clone Wars S2 preview. Today, Yakface (via) are theorizing that it could be Mark Hamill. Interesting theories, but that last one sounds an awful lot like Favreau. On the other hand, there do seem to be two very different Mando voices going on in that trailer…
In less theory-based news, The Clone Wars is in TV Guide’s Sci-Fi Preview. Please join me in boggling that TV Guide is still around.
UPDATE: Whoever it may may be, it is not Mark Hamill.
Out this week: Adventures, Legacy, Insider
It might be worth heading out to the comic store Wednesday, as Diamond is shipping Star Wars Adventures: Princess Leia and the Royal Ransom, Legacy #38 and even the latest Star Wars Insider.
Also worth looking for is The Art of Star Wars: The Clone Wars – Despite the October release date I spotted a copy or two at a Borders this weekend and I’m nowhere near San Diego.
