The Solo reviews are in. They’re a tad mixed – many seem to think it’s a little too safe – but they’re hardly pans. That seems to bode well, given that “a fun Star Wars movie” is all we’re looking for here.
Solo may not be up for any prizes at the Cannes Film Festival, but Thandie Newton is winning with what seems to be – at least among geek circles – the most talked-about dress. Her look for the Solo red carpet was a custom Vivienne Westwood with fabric featuring the action figures of the black characters of the franchise. (Newton is the first black woman to have a major role.) The action figures – photographed by Christian Högstedt – are from Newton’s own collection. They’re layered over Westwood’s ‘Absence of Roses’ print. See more photos of the dress at Red Carpet Fashion Awards!
A new behind the scenes video has emerged at USA Today, showing some new aliens, droids, and more of Lando’s capes. It features Cinematographer Bradford Young, creature effects guru Neal Scanlan, costume designers David Crossman and Glyn Dillon, who reveal that Solo has the most costumes ever produced for a Star Wars film.
While Star Wars Twitter was all aflutter about Ewan McGregor attending last night’s Solo premiere (in light of the afternoon’s big rumor), it was Star Wars TV guy Jon Favreau who ended up slipping us some news. Favreau, who voices Rio Durant in the film, first told Anthony Carboni on the official livestream that he’s written about half of the first season of his upcoming streaming show.
The first wave has seen Solo (check out the red carpet stuff) and here are their reactions. Most of the tweets are fairly vague as to major plot points, but I do recommend that the particularly spoilerphobic stay away for their own sakes.
The world premiere of Solo: A Star Wars Story was tonight! You can rewatch the red carpet video at Youtube, or head under the cut for tweets gathered from the red carpet.
A new article on Solo from the Wall Street Journal mostly treads well-worn ground on the film’s behind-the-scenes director switcharoo, but it does have one new, interesting (if unconfirmed) detail: That Ron Howard reshot 70% of the film.
It’s time for our perennial Obi-wan movie rumor to resurface! This time it comes via the fan site Fantha Tracks, who has a source that claims to have seen documents at Pinewood. A director (perhaps Stephen Daldry, the subject of the last rumor), writing team and even the art department are “in full pre-production mode,” with the movie expected to begin filming after Episode IX is done.
