Rest in Peace, Richard LeParmentier

LeParmentier as General MottiWord has spread quickly through the fan community that Richard LeParmentier, who played Admiral Conan Motti in Episode IV, has died.

Those who can’t quite place who Admiral Motti is will know him as the first guy Vader force chokes in A New Hope. He often told the story that his ability to make his neck do strange things was what garnered him that awesome moment that probably freaked out every little kid just that much more about Darth Vader.

Admiral Motti was made even more famous when George Lucas jokingly gave him the first name of Conan while on the Conan O’Brien Show.

He could be found at many different conventions, regaling everyone with stories of his time in show business. He loved Star Wars fandom and getting to interact with them.

Jaders Bryan Young and Janine Spendlove knew him well and have written a lovely tribute to him.

New Stargate game being voiced by original actors

SG1 UnleashedLet’s dust off the old Stargate hat and share some actual news.

It’s been announced that a mobile game called Stargate SG-1: Unleashed will be released in March.

So far, Richard Dean Anderson, Amanda Tapping and Michael Shanks have confirmed they have provided some voice work for the game. It’s assumed (but not confirmed) that Christopher Judge has also participated, since T’ealc appears to play a big role in the game.

The game will be released in stages and will be available for both Apple and Android.

If we can’t get a new show or movie out of MGM, at least we can enjoy this!

Disney World’s Star Wars Weekends 2013 will run from May 17th to June 9th

WeekendsStart planning your vacation time, now. Disney has announced the dates for Star Wars Weekends 2013.

Each weekend from May 17th through June 9th in Orlando, Florida, you’ll get to meet a rotating array of Star Wars guests and enjoy other Star Wars shows and events at Disney Hollywood Studios. And you can usually count on The 501st and The Rebel Legion to be making appearances, as well.

Returning as hosts will be James Arnold Taylor (Obi-Wan) and Ashley Eckstein (Ahsoka) from The Clone Wars. Both will be continuing the shows they hosted last year. And both are the perfect fit to blend Star Wars and Disney, as both have professed their love of the two franchises. (Which are now one franchise. Maybe?)

Guest announcements and schedules will probably start going out in early 2013 so you can start planning which weekend you’d like to attend.

Start stocking up on your sunscreen!

Natalie Portman is Forbes’ most bankable star

PortmanForbes, always one for making lists, has ranked Natalie Portman (aka Padmé Amidala — please tell me you knew that) as the star worth the most bang for the buck. For every dollar she is paid in salary, the studio makes $42.70. Apparently, she had some rather surprising hits outside of Black Swan. (Who knew No Strings Attached made such a big profit?)

Twilight’s Kristen Stewart was #2.

Another Lucasfilm alum making the list was Shia LaBeouf (Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull) at #3 with $35.80 returned for every dollar he’s paid. (Let’s hear it for him beating out Robert Pattison!)

More lists are surely soon to follow.

Star Wars Reads Day in Decatur, Georgia

Star Wars Reads Day was a roaring success at Little Shop of Stories in Decatur, Georgia. This was the big event for the Atlanta metro area, featuring Ashley Eckstein (aka Ahsoka Tano) as the main guest.

The crowds had formed by about 9:30 with excited kids in Jedi and Ewok costumes. The street musician who always hangs around the square was working his way through Star Wars pieces. Vader came out not long after with the best reaction ever: the kids all yelled out “Yay!” while simultaneously backing up.

Once inside, the 501st and Rebel Legion worked their magic greeting the kids. The display of Star Wars books quickly got picked through. (Which was the whole point, right?)

Star Wars still reads

Chris Alexander wrote a great piece on the Star Wars Blog about how he got through waiting to see Star Wars by reading the novelization. And it took me back to my own similar experience.

Sit back, kids, and listen to an Old Fart Star Wars fan talk about life in the good ol’ days of 1977 and 1978.

I was nine when Star Wars was first released. It’s hard to describe the phenomenon of how quickly it became a part of everything in that first year. This was before the internet. So the fact that it immediately integrated itself into our culture is a wild situation that I’m not sure will ever be repeated. By the middle of the summer of 1977, my friends and I were playing Star Wars without actually having seen the movie. (Without any toys. Can you imagine?)

Stargate Best-Lock toys imminent

Club Jader Michelle gives a heads up about incoming toys for the Stargate franchise.

First spotted on the Sears Canadian website, GateWorld has confirmed with the company, Best-Lock, that they will be releasing four sets to Canada and the US late fall 2012, just in time for your holiday wish list.

Compatible with Lego brand toys, these sets will allow you to build scenes from Abydos and pretty much any other world you’d care to pretend for what appears to be a far lower price point.

It also appears that this company is pursuing licenses with other franchises, so your building fun might not be limited to just Stargate. More announcements are expected at the Dallas Toy Fair in October.
