Despite some faint hopes, there were no real Star Wars surprises in the Oscar nominations. The Last Jedi is up for four: Sound Editing, Sound Mixing, Visual Effects and an Original Score nod for John Williams, his 51st.
Director Rian Johnson shared a video of Williams conducting the movie’s opening fanfare:
The Force Awakens was nominated in the same categories back in 2016, but won none of them. Rogue One, up sound mixing and VFX last year, also lost both.
It’s a good year for diversity, both in genres and for creators, though. Guillermo del Toro’s The Shape of Water leads the pack with 13 nominations, including Best Picture and Best Director. Also up for picture and director are Greta Gerwig’s Lady Bird and Jordan Peele’s Get Out. Rachel Morrison (Netflix’s Mudbound) is the first women to get a Cinematography nod, ever.
In a comic book/connected-universe first, Logan got a nod for adapted screenplay. But Wonder Woman didn’t even get a single nod, not even in the technical categories.
As for other Star Wars folks, Solo’s Woody Harrelson is up for Supporting Actor for Three Billboards outside Ebbing, Missouri.
