Video Monday: What’s a Nubian?

The highlight of this week’s Youtube adventure was the entire Kevin Smith hosted episode of Party for Five, featuring Jason Lee, Stan Lee, Mark Hamill and JJ Abrams: part I, part II, part III. Part II is where the Star Wars stuff is: Hamill also talks about his Batman voice work in the third. I suggest watching the whole thing, though.

I love Kevin Smith movies, but this scene is the only part of Chasing Amy you’ll ever need to see. And I still haven’t seen Clerks 2, but here’s the Star Wars vs. Lord of the Rings scene (with Marshall from Alias!) And, what the hell – I know you want to see Cocknocker. Or just go for the digest version. If you need me to tell you that none of these clips should be watched in mundane public due to language, please turn in your geek card.

That’s telekiniesis, Kyle!

Well, the ‘professional’ Coldplay vid got the attention of cool kid blog Sterogum, so I suppose it’s not too surprising that Gawker sib Idolator did a fanvid post. Star Wars is the only genre fandom featured – an uninspired but mildly amusing ‘Yoda’ vid.

I haven’t linked to many fanvids – honestly, it’s kind of a dry well unless you’re really into Evanescence. However, I did find a vid of Tenacious D’s ‘Wonderboy’ today that made me giggle.

To all the vids I’ve linked before…

Video Monday

The Star Wars episode of That 70’s Show. Or skip straight to the spoof, if you have the urge to hear the term “Jedi dumbass.”

The unemployed Stormtrooper. Awww.

The PhanDom Menace, excerpt from a documentary about an Australian Star Wars fan club. Accents! Costumes! And Timothy Zahn’s in there, for some reason.

The Darklord of Stall One. Will people in Stormtrooper uniforms doing random stuff ever not be funny? Don’t tell me, I don’t want to know.

That is a freaking Stormtrooper!

Video Monday

A New Crew In Town: Clever Battlestar Galactica filk. Why is Baltar the only one with an English accent?

Return of the Jedi Extended Scene. Wasn’t there a Robot Chicken sketch like this once?

The real reason Christopher Eccleston quit Doctor Who.

For the Karrdes: Leia Live at ConnectiCon 2006. Also: Stuff blowing up real good.

TFN’s fake Episode II trailer. Remember this? It has Christopher Walken!

The rest of the garbage

Video Monday: Halloween!

The Life and Death of a Pumpkin, from the folks who bring you Chad Vader. Fan-freaking-tastic.

Old-School Daily Show: Steve Carell teaches Stephen Colbert the true meaning of Halloween. It’s heartwarming. In a way.

Robot Chicken takes on The Great Pumpkin. And yes, it’s flagged as mature content for good reason, but pretty damn funny.

Have a scary Christmas. I’m a big grouch, so this is the closest you’ll ever get to a Christmas-themed video post from me. (The Holiday Special doesn’t count.)

Okay, fine – one more. Your requisite Nightmare Before Christmas clip: This is Halloween. There’s also a new Marilyn Manson version for the 3-D re-release.

Backstreet’s back! I am so, so sorry. Here, have some Ghostbusters instead. Or Dead Man’s Party, an awesome Army of Darkness fanvid.

And of course, it’s just not Halloween without The Rocky Horror Picture Show: It’s just a jump to the left / And then a step to the right / With your hands on your hips / You bring your knees in tight / But it’s the pelvic thrust that really drives you insane / Let’s do the Time Warp again!

Any of you guys know how to Madison?

Video Monday

Under the Tusken Sun. You knew someone would eventually make this fan film…

I’m not a huge Family Guy fan, but they have done some amusing Star Wars riffs, some collected here by Stewie’s Playground.

Judge the Cinemax ‘Fix You’ promo for youself.

The Ballad of Han, Luke & Leia. It’s a filk! It’s a video! It’s both!

And to wrap us up, one of the funniest things I’ve ever seen on TV – the tail end of I Love The 80’s: 1983 containing their Return of the Jedi riff and Micheal Ian Black’s He-Men monologue, which me VH1’s bitch for longer than I feel comfortable admitting. Contains actual praise for Mark Hamill’s acting! Bonus: 1980, Olympic hockey, That’s Incredible! and ESB.

Youtube: Is the party over?

The site took down nearly 30,000 files after complaints from a Japanese entertainment group.

Lucasfilm has taken a stand against the removal of fan videos from Youtube in the recent past, but in the end the choice is really up to Youtube – or Google, who’s now holding the purse strings. Pressure from entertainment organizations could easily ruin the fun for everyone, even when the copyright holder doesn’t object. Or have an official deal in place with Youtube/Google… which may be unlikely for LFL, as they already have an existing deal with Atom Films. (Although… Who knows? I don’t know what LFL’s contracts say.)

I suppose it was only a matter of time, damn my optimism. On the other hand, would Google really buy Youtube just to let it go the way of Napster…?
