Twelve geeky Barbie dolls, but no Star Wars

These are not Barbies. Though they are almost bobbleheads.Topless Robot lists off the 12 greatest Barbie dolls for nerds, including multiple Treks. Who better to wear those short skirts?

As we’ve already addressed many times, I’m the furthest thing there is from a collecting expert, but I don’t think we’ve ever seen a legitimate Star Wars Barbie produced. (Somehow I doubt Kenner or Hasbro even allowed Mattel to think about it.) Which is really a pity, considering how many outfits the prequels produced. And yes, there is Sideshow, but there’s just something about Barbie, in all her opiate-of-the-masses glory.

Drive-by movie news: Wolverine, Star Trek, Kyle Newman and more

Wolverine rules the box office. Naked Hugh Jackman and friends brought in a whooping $160M worldwide this weekend. Also interesting? 47% of the U.S. audience was female. (Hey, look: It had issues, but it was better than X3. Plus, naked Jackman.) Looks like there may be a sequel in the offing after all.

Next week’s shiny. Wolvie faces his first real competition with the release of the new Star Trek on Friday. Anticipation is high, and the reviews are almost ridiculously positive – 100% on Rotten Tomatoes at the moment. And if you must know, Geoff Boucher has the skinny on the film’s homage to ESB.

And on that note… Stephen King’s Dark Tower series may be next for J.J. Abrams.

Let’s not forget Fanboys. With the DVD out in a few weeks, Lightsabre talks to director Kyle Newman.

Lucky Fans Get to See New Star Trek

While the film enjoyed its world premiere in Australia, Texas fans thought they were going to an Austin-area Drafthouse to get a 10-minute sneak peek of the new Star Trek Movie before settling in for a viewing of The Wrath of Khan.

After a bit of “impromptu” theater featuring one Leonard Nimoy, they got to watch the whole friggin’ movie!  Rather annoyingly, the AICN article starts going into story detail (my eyes).  If you can stop yourself, quit reading when he talks about the excitement level in the audience.  If you can’t stop yourself, here’s a much tamer description.  (via)

Sci-fi world this-and-that…

All the news that’s flashed before my eyes:
Supergirl and Wash are being cast on the miniseries remake of V, reports io9. I think they mean Laura Vandervoort, of Smallville, and Alan Tudyk of Firefly. They’ll be joining Firefly‘s Inara Baccarin, and Lost‘s Elizabeth Mitchell. They’ll have the whole set if they can also nab any of the Star Trek alumni who also were on Heroes and any Farscape/Stargate cast member.

Speaking of Star Trek, the new movie’s executive producer, Damon Lindelof, told MTV that despite some TNG characters appearing in the movie’s official lead-in comic, there aren’t any cameos of the TNG main cast in the film, which will be 2 hours long.
