We’re not getting lavish Annie Leibowitz spreads for spinoff movies, but this month does bring Solo star Emilia Clarke as the subject of Vanity Fair’s latest cover story. She talks equal parts Star Wars and Game of Thrones
Forces of Destiny will debut a Qi’ra episode Friday
Friday’s new episode of Forces of Destiny will star Solo‘s Qi’ra, The Star Wars Show revealed today. The previous seven episodes from the web show’s third season came out earlier this month.
Also, new action figures, another Aidan’s Nana story, and… A flip phone?
Marvel is taking on Beckett this summer
Woody Harrelson’s Tobia Beckett is getting a Marvel one-shot. Solicited for August, Beckett will be written by Gary Duggan (Chewbacca) with art by Will Sliney, Edgar Salazar and Marc Laming. The solicitation promises to reveal more about Enfys Nest and why they are “so dead set on taking him down once and for all.”
→ Solo is tracking for a $130-150M opening weekend – below the previous tracking, but still not a number to scoff at.
→ In addition to the cover story, Variety also has an interview with Donald Glover.
→ Emilia Clarke was on Jimmy Fallon, where she shows that her Shyriiwook is NOT up to spec (there’s also a new clip!), talks about ditching a screening for the royal wedding (on TV), and played charades.
How George Lucas helped out on a Solo scene
An early report on Solo gave us the impression that George Lucas actually helped direct a small part of the film, now the fuller part of the story can be told. Here’s the scene – of which we’ve seen a brief preview of in commercials – and George Lucas’s part in it, from Variety’s cover story.

Adventures in mistranslation: No one has confirmed a young Lando film
The Star Wars newsosphere was rocked this morning when Premiere France published a story where Kathleen Kennedy seemingly said that a Lando Calrissian spinoff was in the works. It all turned out to be a translation error though, and the story has since been corrected. While Kennedy isn’t ruling such a film out – and with all the love for Solo’s Donald Glover out there she’d be crazy to – but she definitely isn’t saying it’s next up after Episode IX.
In the meantime, there’s still that Obi-wan rumor to chew on. If that does end up happening for 2020, expect Lando to be the next perennial rumor.
Solo reviews are mixed, but most have something good to say
The Solo reviews are in. They’re a tad mixed – many seem to think it’s a little too safe – but they’re hardly pans. That seems to bode well, given that “a fun Star Wars movie” is all we’re looking for here.

Thandie Newton’s Star Wars dress wins on Solo red carpet at Cannes
Solo may not be up for any prizes at the Cannes Film Festival, but Thandie Newton is winning with what seems to be – at least among geek circles – the most talked-about dress. Her look for the Solo red carpet was a custom Vivienne Westwood with fabric featuring the action figures of the black characters of the franchise. (Newton is the first black woman to have a major role.) The action figures – photographed by Christian Högstedt – are from Newton’s own collection. They’re layered over Westwood’s ‘Absence of Roses’ print. See more photos of the dress at Red Carpet Fashion Awards!
As for the film itself, it received a three-minute standing ovation from the Cannes crowd.
Fashion bloggers Tom & Lorenzo have eben more pictures, and call getting this dress made “just about the most badass nerd move of all time”.

Now there are two of them: Harrison Ford surprises Alden Ehrenreich during press
