Hey, remember how Thrawn isn’t the only character in Rebels this season? Looks like Ezra is continuing to skirt some lines…
The third season of Rebels will debut Saturday, September 24th, on Disney XD.
There’s a new Rebels promo today with a further look at the show’s upcoming third season – and more Thrawn dialogue.
The Rebels page on Disney XD’s website also got a facelift.
The third season will debut with ‘Steps into Shadow’ on Saturday, September 24 at 8:30 p.m. ET.
Out tomorrow is the second season of Rebels on Blu-Ray. io9 has a review of the set, noting that there are only about 10 minutes of extras worth the trouble.
Meanwhile, Wednesday brings Han Solo #3 and a hardcover collected edition of last year’s Shattered Empire (which also includes the one-off where we learn about C-3PO’s red arm) to the comic shops.
Will Darth Vader or the Inquisitors show up in Rebels S3? With the focus so far on Thrawn, Dave Filoni talks to /Film about whether we’ll see any of Rebels’ traditional villains in the new season.
The third season of Star Wars Rebels will debut Saturday, September 24 at 8:30 p.m. ET on Disney XD. The hour-long season premiere ‘Steps into Shadow’ features the introduction of classic villain Grand Admiral Thrawn into canon – the first character to make that leap since the old Expanded Universe was reclassified as Star Wars Legends.
As we learned at Celebration, the new season also introduces new looks for Rebels characters Ezra and Sabine, plus a new character voiced by Doctor Who’s Tom Baker. Here’s a new teaser:
Despite early leads by Darth Talon and Starkiller, Jaina Solo won Hasbro’s 2016 fan choice figure poll. (Here’s the percentages just before the poll closed.)
Jaina, the oldest child and only daughter of Leia Organa and Han Solo in decanonized Legends timeline, has had at least one figure from Hasbro in the past, plus a Bishoujo-style statue from Kotobukiya. The new figure will take some time: The fruits of last year’s poll – Darth Revan and Sabine Wren – aren’t expected to hit the shelves until late this year.
Hasbro announced several new figures at SDCC, including a 6′ Hera Syndulla and an Imperial Royal Guard inspired in part by the (also Legends) comic Crimson Empire.
And getting a 3.75 figure, the newly canonized Grand Admiral Thrawn, who will appear in the upcoming third season of Rebels. (His rank will be correct on the final figure.)
The ‘Your Snoke Theory Sucks’ sticker by the Steele Wars podcast seems to be quite the hit out of London last weekend, spotted in the hands of both Pablo Hidalgo and Rian Johnson. Steele Saunders even talked to Inverse about them, and why they proved to be so popular. Not at the con? You can still get your own in both sticker and t-shirt form.
→ IGN’s Daniel Krupa takes a look at the 6 classic movies that Episode VIII director Rian Johnson encouraged his cast and crew to watch, and how they might influence the upcoming film.
→ Dave Filoni chats Rebels S3, Thrawn and dealing with a “mass continuity” with io9’s Germain Lussier.
→ Felicity Jones talked about her big line in the Rogue One sizzle reel with Entertainment Tonight, and here’s what we learned from the Rogue One exhibit.
→ Spotted on the floor: Kelly Marie Tran, who still had filming to do!
→ As always, check out the CJ Tumblr for more photos, videos, GIFs and links from the con!
We learned yesterday that Timothy Zahn’s Thrawn novel will be a prequel to the character’s Rebels appearance, but Zahn gives a more specific timeline in a quick interview on StarWars.com.
The novel begins “with his first encounter with the Empire,” and ends just before his Rebels debut, Zahn says. (A new take on Outbound Flight, maybe?)
Zahn also reveals just how much he’s seen of the Rebels appearance (about as much as we did) and whether we can expect anything from his Legends books.
Another Celebration is over, and while this one felt a bit restrained, here are the big hits. Follow the links for all the details!
Rogue One
We didn’t get a Rogue One trailer – what was shown only to the live audience was mostly footage we’ve already seen with only a handful of new additions – but there was a nifty sizzle reel. And we learned a couple things about the worlds and characters of the film – plus a poster! And Gwendoline Christie is a fantastic panel host. Later, Kathleen Kennedy said they’re leaning towards not giving the film an opening crawl. Also, check out these amazing cast photos from behind the scenes at the con.
Rebels expands the GFFA
But the con’s big surprise – at least for our purposes – is Thrawn coming to Rebels. The rumor has been floating around since January 2016, but what really took it over the top was the additional news that Timothy Zahn will be writing a new novel about the character. In other book news, we learned that Alexander Freed is doing the Rogue One novelization, while James Luceno is writing the film’s tie-in, Catalyst. We also got a cover for the Ahsoka novel, as well as some hints as to what the character got up to between The Clone Wars and Rebels.
Han Solo and the Official Casting Announcement
Alden Ehrenreich was finally confirmed as the young Han Solo, and Batman on the Millennium Falcon is totally canon. (Or not.)
Episode VIII
With the focus on Rogue One, we didn’t get much on VIII. But Mark Hamill praised Rian Johnson’s dialogue, and Johnson showed a few new behind-the-scenes pics at the Future Filmmakers panel. We didn’t get a title because it doesn’t have one yet. But remember, there’s still one more Celebration between now and the film’s release…
And finally, here’s a sweet video that was played at the Closing Ceremonies:
We’ll have a new tweet roundup in a day or so, as well as continuing wrap-up coverage, but those are the highlights!
