No surprise here: Five ILM films are on the preliminary list for the Best Visual Effects Oscar. The list of 15 will be narrowed down to 8 finalists, and from there to the 3 Oscar nominees.

It’s official: Jon Stewart is hosting the 80th annual Academy Awards.

The Academy is expected to announce today that Jon Stewart will host the Oscars again. That means I might actually watch them!
Best effects of the year?
Variety (via Hyperspace) reports that Casino Royale, Eragon, Night at the Museum, X-Men: The Last Stand, Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man’s Chest, Poseidon and Superman Returns are finalists for the three visual effects Oscar nominee spots. ILM worked on Pirates, Posidon, and Eragon.
No Academy Award for Sith
Howard Berger and Tami Lane just won the Best Makeup Oscar for The Chronicles of Narnia: The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe. It was the lone category Revenge of the Sith was nominated in.
Wherefore art thou, Oscar?
In yet another article about the Oscars, The New York Sun theorizes that both Revenge of the Sith and Sin City were locked out of the visual effects category because of union issues.
