The fandom minute: The internet loves costume contests, slave Leia, and the concept of a Jabba sitcom

pondaRebelscum contest winners. The fansite announced the winners of their annual Halloween costume contest yesterday – this (Robot Chicken-inspired?) Ponda Baba by Michael took first place in the adult contest.

Sing it. Are you sick of seeing that old pic of Carrie Fisher and her ROTJ stunt double being treated as some sort of rare, leaked revelation? Yeah, me too.

According to Jabba? The King of Tatooine? io9’s Annalee Newitz mines Bonnie’s interview with the The Box director Richard Kelly for his idea of a Jabba the Hutt tv show. Scary thought: It’s not really out of the realm of possibility.

Blotter. A New Zealand fan had his stormtrooper armor stolen off his back porch before he had a chance to wear it. At least the perpetrators were caught on camera?

Craft corner: Stormtrooper outfits and playworthy lightsabers out of easy-to-find materials. Or… an AT-AT dog costume, because tiny little dogs just have too much innate dignity.

Cute attack: Star Wars at Build-A-Bear Workshop

Shouldn't the more reddish bear get Obi-Wan's outfit? NOT CANON!

Even putting the Ewoks aside, fanmade Star Wars and other sci-fi themed teddy bears are nothing new, as a quick search on Flickr (and CJ’s own Lissy) will tell you.

But now we have something from the official realm to make it easier to please kids and collectors: Star Wars costumes from Build-a-bear Workshop. Currently they only have Clone Wars-inspired Anakin, Jedi (totally Obi-Wan,) and Rex, plus a Darth Vader and a themed pajama set. Will we see more movie-inspired styles? I suspect the Christmas sales rates will tell us… Dressed bears cost $40-$35, and the costumes alone go for $15-12. The Vader outfit is currently one of their top 20 products! (via)

Nostalgia Minute: Rebellious Robot Turns 30

rebrobotIf you were a kid when A New Hope was first released (we’re talking ol’ fart fans), then chances are that The Mystery of the Rebellious Robot holds a tender place in your heart.

Writer John Booth tracked down one of its creators, Mark Corcoran, for an interview on its 25th anniversary.  He has updated it for the 30th.  An interesting look at what was going on during that era. (via)

This makes me want to dig out all of my old kids’ books and relive the joy.

The Star Wars costumes of Dragon*Con

If the reports are anything to go on, there was no missing the many steampunk-themed costumes at Dragon*Con this weekend; No surprise that there were several Star Wars variations. Not surprisingly there were a lot of stormtroopers, bounty hunters and your other standards, but Cardinal Vader may be a new one. (Though one must admit it isn’t much of a logical leap.) Or we can just go straight for the crossdressers. Or the ever-popular Spaceballs. (Photo at right by Ryan James.)

And this adorable no-frills two-person AT-AT costume was a big hit with the #dragoncon tweeters. How about them boxes? But for sheer ‘ah, screw it’ daring, my vote goes to these guys.

Etsy scavenger: Halloween costume picks

Jedi gear isn’t too hard to make yourself (or so I’ve heard) but if sewing isn’t a priority, you can probably do worse than looking around Etsy. Here are a few listings the Jawas have scrounged up.

Need a Jedi cloak? Mulligan Stew Boutique is on the case. They have three listings for custom-made Jedi trappings: an adult cloak ($85,) a child’s cloak ($60,) and complete child costume ($140.)

Sultry Delights also does custom Jedi tunics ($150,) among other things.

Actually, there are several Jedi robes. My favorite listing is probably Brown Cloak of the Republic, featuring claims of fabric that resists “attacks by the dark side.” ($129.95) But your best bargain may be CustomKids, which will make a child-sized Jedi robe for only $19.99.

And of course, there are the Slave Leias, including an ‘inspired by’ version for bellydancing.

Geekdad Matt Blum has proof that George Lucas is an evil genius. It makes as much sense as anything else these days:

My kids are pretty smart — I don’t like to brag, it’s just the truth. …So why, then, are they so drawn to a character that causes near-universal revulsion in those past puberty? Yes, exactly: Because George Lucas cleverly designed Jar Jar Binks so that kids would love him but adults would hate him. Why would he do that? Because it’s part of an evil scheme to take over the world, of course.

Of course! It’s so obvious!

The fandom minute: Wedge, dreams of Episode VII, collecting, princesses, day camp and go pro

A good wingman is hard to find. A t-shirt tribute to everyone’s favorite secondary character. This is an excellent shirt to wear when asking Aaron or Mike to sign your arm. (Yes men, you can get one, too.)

If you thought Episode I was slashtastic… Episode VII is among the five posters for sci-fi spinoffs that Sci Fi Wire really wants to see. Nice idea, but their suggestion of Peter Jackson is a bit much. (I mean, really? REALLY? Did no one see his King Kong? Lord of the Rings is one thing, but no giant gorilla movie has any right to go on that long.)
