I figure I ought to be at least a little nice to TFN, since they are sending us many lovely clicks, so today’s thread is a helpful one that has yet to collapse under its own weight: EU fans, how would you define a strong female character?
That was my thought as I was browsing over to Lightsabre this evening… They’ve interviewed our own Chris Gereke.
I know the internet is circular, but this is ridiculous: TheForce.Net discovers 2005. Err, The Complex and Terrifying Reality of Star Wars Fandom, aka Star Wars Fans Hate Star Wars, perhaps the most popular tongue-in-cheek fandom commentary of the last few years.
Full disclosure: we didn’t blog it until 2006, when it really started to blow up big in the halls of fandom. Still, the fact that there are people out in fandom who still haven’t seen it yet kinda scares me… And that there are people who take it seriously even more so. It’s always clearly felt like a parody to me, but what could I possibly know about pointing and laughing at fandom?
Nothing says ‘serious candidate’ like annoucing your run for public office on TheForce.net message boards. The sad thing is, it’s actually slightly more respectable than his last attempt.
All we can do is hope it’s all an ill-conceived plot for the lulz.
Unfortunate headline choice of the day: Can You Tell It’s Chubby Day Here? I’m not the only one thinking what I’m thinking, right?
For years, FanfiX.com was the fanfic archive for Star Wars fandom. The archive started in the late 90’s and was officially dubbed FanfiX.com with the domain purchase in 1997. And then, in 2003, it vanished, and people have been intermittently asking about it ever since. Wombat, one of the site archivists, gives her account.
While FanfiX could never completely archive all Star Wars fic online, particularly after the fandom explosion with TPM in 1999 and the growing popularity of self-upload archives like FanFiction.net during that same period, the loss was a striking blow to the SW fanfic community. Yes, you can still access it via the WayBack Machine, but the possibility was there for a central touchstone for the SW fanfic community.
Are all-encompassing archives like FanFiX or The Gossamer Project practical anymore? Are they even possible? Do we need them? Sometimes I wonder…
The Enjayoh Is Seriously Underappreciated. The great irony of this thread, no matter how one feels about the NJO, is that in a few years there will be one just like it regarding the much-maligned Ellohteeff. Today’s ‘turd’ is tomorrow’s trophy; Thus goes the circle of fandom. (Except perhaps in regard to The Crystal Star.)
Elegant, functional web design is not something you look at Star Wars fandom for, and certainly not among the collectors, but I was rather blown away by Josh Budich’s Star Wars Collection. Wow. I believe that’s what the Cargo Bay must have once wanted to be when it grew up.
Star Wars: Revelations could totally be canon, guys! I’m sure Lucasfilm is breathlessly awaiting your calls.
