30 Questions My Girlfriend Asked Me About Star Wars is awfully familiar, isn’t it?
ANH props and costumes at Profiles in History
There are several Star Wars items in the latest Profiles in History auction, including Threepio’s feet (above,) a TIE miniature, a Duros latex head cast, an Imperial Officer uniform and X-Wing master molds, all from from A New Hope. The Star Wars items are lots 901-905, but there’s plenty of sci-fi and action film items scattered throughout, including the Holy Grail from The Last Crusade (Lot 916.) You don’t have to be a collector to enjoy paging through the catalog PDF… (Thanks to Rach on the list!)
Wordle: Return of the Meme
So I was cleaning out the old bookmarks the other night, rediscovered Wordle and proceeded to copy and paste all three original trilogy scripts (courtesy of Blue Harvest) into it. Last time, I promise.
Movies in brief
Scientific American sums up the important science fiction movies of our time… With only one sentence each.
Star Wars second on AFI’s top 10 sci-fi
Those crazy list-making folks at the American Film Institute have placed A New Hope in second place on their list of the top 10 science fiction films. Click through to see the original trailer and some clips of James Earl Jones talking about the film.
The top spot goes to 2001, with E.T., A Clockwork Orange, The Day the Earth Stood Still, Blade Runner, Alien, Terminator 2, the original Invasion of the Body Snatchers and Back to the Future rounding out the choices.
There’s a fantasy list as well, which includes The Wizard of Oz, Fellowship of the Ring, and King Kong.
A quick Star Wars refresher course
‘No Jiggling in The Empire: Fun Facts About Star Wars’ is basically the kind of stuff you’d get asked by trivia monkeys at a Star Wars con (trust me on that one) but what the hell. Even uberfans need refresher courses.
But… Carlos Castaneda???
31 years of Star Wars
Thirty-one years ago today, Star Wars was unleashed upon the masses… And it also happens to be the 25th birthday of Return of the Jedi. (Which is airing on Spike tonight!)
To celebrate the occasion, there’s a huuuuge poll over at the Livejournal Star Wars community.
Today’s Star Wars history lesson
Plenty of fans are pretty hip to this already, but Greg Davies’s post on the cinematic influences behind Star Wars is a nice overview – and comes complete with Youtube clips for comparison.
Movie math: How far does $20 million go?
John Scalzi takes a look at Star Wars success when compared with Speed Racer’s failure – and how blockbuster culture has changed in the last thirty-some years. (A great companion to this piece is the NYT’s impressive box office chart from February.)
So a farmboy, a Jedi, and a Cylon walk into a bar…
It’s Friday, April 11th, and that means one thing: A New Hope is airing on Spike tonight at 8/7C. (Okay, two things: a new episode of Battlestar Galactica at 10/9C.)
Gamers will also want to tune back in to Spike at midnight for GameTrailers TV, which will be showing another The Force Unleashed preview (“the world premiere of the duel mode in the Wii”) and SoulCalibur IV game footage of Yoda and Vader. (You can also catch all that at GameTrailers.com later.)
And don’t forget to vote in our poll on if you’re watching the movies on Spike! It expires Sunday night.
