Newsflash: Traviss still not coming back to Star Wars

Folks just aren’t ready to let the Karen Traviss/Imperial Commando/Clone Wars brouhaha go, and io9 remains committed to stirring the hornet’s nest, getting hold of the woman herself. This go-round Traviss puts more weight on “contractual differences,” saying that canon and The Clone Wars was secondary to “pay and working practices.”

However, she does confirm their theory that the cancellation of the Fett book was due to the live action series. I remain skeptical (we are missing so many pieces) but it’ll all come out in due time.

A day in the life of Sue Rostoni, or, random EU news

Sue Rostoni documents a “typical day” on her blog, dropping a few bits of news along the way. The highlights:

  • Joe Schreiber’s next Star Wars novel (Deathtroopers prequel?) is titled Black Orchid. Yes, there are orchids in the GFFA, thanks to Children of the Jedi. Kind of apt.
  • Looks like Saba Sebatyne will be on the back cover of Vortex
  • A new author and a new story pitch were both (separately) approved today.

All aboard the ‘Voyage of Temptation’

Always start your voyage with a jaunty hat.

Just sit right back and you’ll hear a tale, a tale of a fateful trip
That started from a Mando port aboard this upright ship.
The clones were a mighty fighting men, the Jedi brave as bros.
Five passengers set sail that day
For a half hour show, a half hour show.

We interrupt this theme song parody for some reviews of the Star Wars: The Clone Wars episode, ‘Voyage of Temptation’. Song will continue after these important messages:

  • IGN gives it a 9.1, with high marks for developing Obi-wan’s character as someone who chose one path, but felt some remorse, and the horror of the spider droids.
  • Big Shiny Robot liked Obi-wan’s backstory, and how it fit with Attack of the Clones, and was pleased with the super battle droid boarding action.
  • Prequel Appreciation Society called ‘Voyage’ amusing and entertaining, and likes Anakin’s prodding into Obi/Satine, and ponders on what is and isn’t out of character for Obi-wan Kenobi.
  • TheForce.net ventures to say that TCW is handling love better than the prequels. Although really, all we see is love through the bitterness of remorse. Also examined are the role of the villain Merrik, and nods to the films.
  • MTV Movies Blog points out how Anakin’s action fit into a larger pattern of falling toward the dark side.
  • Pendragon’s Post hails this episode as being The Clone Wars in top form, surpassing the movies in its ability to have dialogue and characters in a love story.
  • Television Zombies gives it 3.5 of 5 sabers, liking the action, but finding it a bit cheesy and pushing the boundaries of a kid’s show.

The Clone Wars review: ‘Voyage of Temptation’

Obi's wants

Love… exciting and new… or in the case of Obi-Wan Kenobi, repressed and a little scary.  The latest Clone Wars may have been pitched as Titanic in space, but it plays out a bit more like an episode of The Love Boat.  Old flames reignite, different plotlines intersect, and romance is simply assumed.  All that, plus a Special Guest Appearance by R2-D2 – right after these messages. John Jackson Miller’s Knight Errant to explore the Old Republic… With a double-barreled twist

I had some theories on what the ‘epic announcement’ Sue Rostoni hinted at earlier this week, but Lucasbooks, Dark Horse and Del Rey pull together a surprise: Not only a new comic series from Knights of the Old Republic’s John Jackson Miller, but one that will come with its own novel (and a female protagonist!) Here’s what we have on the plot so far:

…Writer John Jackson Miller introduces us to Kerra Holt, a young Jedi who’s about to realize that her role in the galaxy is far more important, and vastly different, than she could have ever imagined.

Set one thousand years before Episode I, in a time referred to as the “Dark Age of the Republic,” this story takes place in an era when the Sith were legion and the Republic was strained to the breaking point, leaving large swaths of the galaxy with no one to turn to. This pivotal time in the history of Star Wars has been largely unexplored, until now.

Gate Geek – Lt. Scott is not a horn dog

Poor Brian J Smith.  Stargate fans are capable of some major angsting, but he has been on the receiving end of much collective fandom crap for the perception that his character, Lt. Scott, runs around all Captain Kirk-like.  But he asks you to put it into some perspective.

The article is all about how things went in the first half of Season 1 (conveniently available now on DVD).  And it even includes video of him answering a question from his mom, who just can’t seem to get a copy of the poster of her son used to tease the show.  (Ed. – Someone help this poor woman out!)

For those who are having trouble waiting for the show to start up again, The Hiatus Project is in full swing.  (No haters allowed.)

The fandom minute: Felicia Day, Kristen Bell, space, Jedi and discounted alcoholic beverages

dayFelicia Day gets her saber on. The internet geek superstar (you probably know her from The Guild, and Dr. Horrible) can check another box on her ultimate geek list by appearing in an internet lightsaber fight.

Kristen Bell teams up with hometown 501s. The Fanboys actress helped the the Great Lakes Garrison raise $2,000 for Michigan charities.

Those look familiar. Check out what they’re building on the International Space Station. Go go science fact!
