Gate Geek: Comings and goings

After 14 years, the much-beloved producer/writer/director Robert Cooper will be leaving the Stargate production house.  Cooper is responsible for the much-beloved episodes “200,” “Vegas” and “Unending;” to name just a few.

In other goings, the Official Stargate Magazine will be closing down in September.  (Its publisher, Titan, is the same company that puts out Star Wars Insider.)  Given the changes in the publishing world where fan magazines can’t pass on news anymore, this is kinda not surprising.

In happier news, fans of Richard Dean Anderson will be pleased to learn that he’s coming out of “retirement” (has he ever really stopped working?) for a recurring role on USA’s “Facing Kate.”

Star Wars in the news: Lawyers, marriage and lasers

The Star Wars kid is all grown up. Ghyslain Raza, who rose to unwilling internet fame as the subject of one of the internet’s first and most famous viral videos, hasn’t done too badly for himself. He’s pursuing a law degree (perhaps inspired by the lawsuit that he filed against the classmates who uploaded the infamous video?) and is the president of a conservation society in his hometown of Trois-Rivières.

Wedding bells. Harrison Ford and Calista Flockhart got hitched Tuesday! The pair made it legal in New Mexico, where Ford is shooting Cowboys and Aliens. New Mexico governor Bill Richardson, a friend of the couple, performed the wedding at the Governor’s Mansion in Santa Fe.

…And not so much. In less happy news, Hayden Christensen and Rachel Bilson, who also got engaged in 2009, are “taking a break.”

Don’t try this at home. No, seriously, don’t. A company in Hong Kong is selling a laser “home theater projector” that resembles a lightsaber and is strong enough to burn skin and cause “irreversable retinal damage.” It can be purchased online for a mere $200. What could go wrong?

A few upcoming comic hints from Randy Stradley

We haven’t heard much on the comic front since the cancellation of Legacy, but DarkHorse.com has a few hints today:

  • John Ostrander has “already begun work on the scripts for the next very top-secret thing.”
  • Tom Taylor has proposed “a semi-regular series” based on Blood Ties, aka the Fett comic. However, it “will not be what you expect it to be!” So… Not Fett, then?
  • A “well-known” writer has a proposal in for a series that could launch Dark Horse’s twenty-fifth anniversary year. We’ll hear more about it towards the end of July.

Could one of these items be the big news for Celebration. We can only hope.

Oh, and there’s also a peek at the Legacy #50 pencils.

OMG! Jon Stewart is coming to Celebration V!

And he’s interviewing George Lucas! My snarky news-junkie heart is all aflutter!

In their conversation, dubbed The Main Event, Stewart and Lucas will discuss the history of the Star Wars saga and delve into the arcana of the multi-billion-dollar series. Stewart is a huge Star Wars fan — Lucas appeared on Stewart’s show back in January when the filmmaker was promoting his book, George Lucas’s Blockbusting, and the two had great banter with each other — but fans who may be worried that Stewart won’t ask their hottest burning questions can submit their own at www.starwarscelebration.com.
