SDCC: Saturday (and some Friday) roundup
Someone got stabbed with a pen in Hall H this evening; There’s a report from San Diego’s NBC affiliate and Comic Book Resources and Entertainment Weekly are on the case. (Harrison Ford is not a suspect.) The rumors have been flying over Twitter, including allegations that seat-squatting (a common practice) was a factor.

- The prequels are safe from Family Guy; Indiana Jones, not so much. Their Return of the Jedi spoof is named… wait for it… “It’s a Trap!” Oh Family Guy, your creativity is boundless.
- Even putting The Clone Wars aside, there were a few EU figures in Hasbro’s presentation – more than I was expecting, anyway. The Comic Packs continue (as Entertainment Earth exclusives) with Legacy’s Deliah Blue/Darth Nihl. Knights of the Old Republic’s Jarael/Rohlan Dyre (image 50,) Jaster Mereel/Montross from Jango Fett: Open Seasons and Rogue Squadron’s Baron Fel/Ysanne Isard (51.) I suppose the Jodo Kast on 35 counts, too.

SDCC: The Clone Wars S3 trailer
The Clone Wars now holds a Guinness World Record for the “highest rated sci-fi animation currently on television.” Behold the power of franchise! (Cynic alert: I don’t doubt that it’s true, but has that been a Guinness record before? And if so, what show held it last?) But the real thing you want to see is the official Season 3 trailer.
SDCC: Eight Star Wars comic series coming in 2011, including Blackmen on Vader
So much for there being no EU news out of Comic-Con… Comic Book Resources reports that editor Randy Stradley revealed that there will be eight new Star Wars series in 2011, including something Vader-centric from Hayden Blackmen:
Most will be revealed at Star Wars Celebration, but Stradley said Blackman will be writing a Darth Vader series. “It chronicles one of Vader’s greatest failures ever,” the editor said. Vader then lit up his lightsaber and choked Stradley using The Force.
I suspect most of those – including the Vader one – are actually mini-series, but time (and Celebration) will tell.
‘Darth Vader’ robs bank; The Empire responds
A man dressed as Darth Vader robbed a Long Island bank on Thursday. The Empire’s response, via DeathStarPR:
The Galactic Empire categorically and emphatically denies Lord Vader’s involvement in the alleged robbery and quite frankly, we find these allegations offensive. Several reliable witnesses can confirm that at the time of the robbery, Darth Vader was busy brutally murdering a Jedi cell in a galaxy far, far away.
They go on to use “Darth Vader’s’ fashion choices as proof. However, Darth Vader claims he is at Comic-Con. What is the real story? Stay tuned…

Quickly! Dispatches from San Diego Comic-Con
San Diego Comic-Con is here, and StarWars.com has snapshots from Preview night. (Watch their Flickr for stuff from today/tonight.) Of special note for EU fans: The cover to John Jackson Miller’s Knight Errant novel. Newsflash: It snows.
- The Westboro Baptist Church showed up. There was mockery. It was genius. Trekkie, I salute you.
- Joss Whedon is directing The Avengers. Officially.
- Boba Fett is going to be in The Force Unleashed II, raising the game’s level of fanboy pandering to critical levels.
The geek girls panel was this evening, but I’m not seeing any reports just yet… It did launch a hashtag, though.
Nickelodeon announces Airbender followup The Legend of Korra
Some great news for fans of the cartoon Avatar: The Last Airbender! We’re finally getting confirmation of the long-rumored new cartoon. Korra returns to the world of Avatar: The Last Airbender 70 years later, following Aang’s sucessor. Avatar Korra is “a passionate, rebellious, and fearless teenaged girl from the Southern Water Tribe.” Here are a few more plot details from the press release:
With three of the four elements under her belt (Earth, Water, and Fire), Korra seeks to master the final element, Air. Her quest leads her to the epicenter of the modern “Avatar” world, Republic City – a metropolis that is fueled by steampunk technology. It is a virtual melting pot where benders and non-benders from all nations live and thrive. However, Korra discovers that Republic City is plagued by crime as well as a growing anti-bending revolution that threatens to rip it apart. Under the tutelage of Aang’s son, Tenzin, Korra begins her airbending training while dealing with the dangers at large.
The series is headed up by Avatar creators Michael DiMartino and Bryan Konietzko and expected to premiere in 2011. This hasn’t been confirmed, but it’s worth noting that rumor mill has suggested that the series may feature some flashbacks to the characters from Airbender.
Review: Karen Miller’s Clone Wars Gambit: Siege
Obi-Wan and Anakin are still stuck on Lanteeb, a planet far in the Outer Rim and of seeming little consequence. The Lanteebans pose no apparent strategic value to the Republic or Separatists; it’s an attitude that grossly misjudges the efforts of captured scientist Bant’ena Fhernan. She’s been hired to construct a virus to end all viruses, a massive biological weapon that will sway the war in Dooku’s favor, but getting materials for it isn’t easy. The key ingredient, damotite, lays deep within the sinuous mines of Lanteeb and Separatist overseer Lok Durd rides the locals hard with threats of drastic food and water rationing if his unreasonable quota and timetable aren’t met.
Against all impossibilities, the Lanteeban’s work furiously every day, risking damotite poisoning to please Durd. When Anakin and Obi-Wan crash their vehicle and end up stranded in the mining city responsible for churning out the dangerous material, the two are welcomed only as long as the villagers don’t know they’re Jedi. Naturally, an invading droid army and a failing shield barrier that forces the pair to use the Force for self preservation were probably unavoidable inevitabilities. Today in Celebration V: Ralph revealed, Last Tour detailed
The ‘lost’ Star Wars artwork of Ralph McQuarrie will be on display at Celebration. The pieces – discovered due to a furnace repair too late to make The Art of Ralph McQuarrie – include “design work on characters, creatures, spacecraft, weapons and worlds.”
- Last Tour to Endor is getting bigger all the time. At least we can assume Disney has the space?
- There’s a trivia contest, of course.
- And medallions! The Pennsylvania Star Wars Collecting Society will be selling a limited run featuring Chewbacca to raise funds for the Canine Corps.
