Batten down the hatches, it’s Star Wars sequel trilogy rumor time yet again

Is it ridiculous rumor time already? IESB is reporting that we could see a (sigh) sequel trilogy after the 3-D rereleases. Since IESB seems down at the moment, here’s Bryan’s report over at the Examiner.

Am I skeptical? Of course. Do I really want to hear people squeeing over how this is totally going to be [insert favorite EU thing here] on film? Hells no. Y’all should know better by now. (And IESB is also saying – per io9 – that the trilogy won’t be about Skywalkers.)

Is a sequel trilogy possible? Of course, even taking into account George Lucas’ frequently stated lack of interest in sequels or further movies. But the man has also shown an inability to let go of Star Wars in recent years: Witness his continued involvement in The Clone Wars .

But I’m a cynic, and this whole thing sounds like every single rumor and report about the live-action series thrown into a fanboy’s wet dream blender. I don’t doubt there are folks backstage at Lucasfilm pressing for more movies – who wouldn’t want that job security? – but the trick is whether they will or can convince George. We can’t be sure of until he – not the rumor mongers – comes out and says it. Don’t hold your breath.

UPDATE: Lucasfilm denies the report at Underwire:

“This is, of course, completely false,” Lucasfilm spokesman Josh Kushins told Wired.com in an e-mail Saturday about the report. “George Lucas has plenty of projects to keep him busy right now — including plenty of Star Wars projects — but there are no new Star Wars feature films planned.”

The Clone Wars review: ‘The Academy’

Let’s be honest: so far, this hasn’t been the best season of The Clone Wars. So when an episode exceeds my expectations, as this one did, I’m stuck wondering if it’s because the bar had been lowered in the first place.  In retrospect, ‘The Academy’ is the best mystery that this show has ever done, but because the previous episode was so riddled with plot holes and inconsistencies, I wasn’t even sure that I was watching a mystery until the third act.  Still, that third act was a doozy. Halloween approaches! Are you prepared?

It’s the time of year when one’s fancy turns to carving squash and dressing up… And candy. I can’t help you with candy (uhh… go to the store?) but I can point you in the right direction for the rest.

But pumpkins are only part of the Halloween fun… I’m sure you know this already if you plan to enter, but it’s Rebelscum costume contest time! They’re always a hoot – just make sure to read the rules! (Please, someone dress up as Luke’s hand.)

Steve Sansweet is retiring from LFL

Today, StarWars.com has broken the news that Steve Sansweet will be leaving Lucasfilm in April 2011. We’ve always been great fans of Steve, so I feel pretty safe in saying that all of Club Jade might be shedding a tear or two in tribute come spring.

He’s not stepping away from Star Wars entirely: “I intend to remain actively engaged with Star Wars and fandom,” he says. We’ll be sad to see him go, but I’ve no doubt that Steve will flourish.

Details, details. We got a couple of updates from Sue Rostoni on the StarWars.com forums last week. I had asked if there was a chance or others joining Zahn to do annotations for the Heir to the Empire anniversary edition, and she wasn’t sure — but did say that Del Rey was looking into it. She did have a solid answer on the ETA for the next Lost Tribe of the Sith story: October 25th, aka next Monday. (Hopefully it’ll contain a different Vortex excerpt.)

Short story. Speaking of John Jackson Miller, StarWars.com has an original Knight Errant short story, ‘Influx.’

Shadow Games. Maya Kaathryn Bohnhoff reveals the main cast for the novel-formerly-known-as-Holostar.

Book Review: Star Wars Art: Visions

It’s the time of year when all the Star Wars ‘holiday books’ are released; leaving fans drooling and wondering which one they should put on their list.  One that seems to have gotten lost in the promotional blitz is Star Wars Art: Visions.

Inspired by an idea George Lucas discussed with J. W. Rinzler, this book is a magnificent collection of art that should please everyone’s tastes.

Each artist was commissioned by Lucas to create their vision of Star Wars.  What they come up with is a wondrous variety of art in styles from Renaissance to Pop and spanning many different aspects of the saga.  Each piece is given its own page or pages on high quality paper.  And this works well, as you’ll want to study many of them in detail.

I had reactions from laughter to sadness.  And they’re each one interesting in their own style.  At the end of the book are explanations of the work from many of the artists that add to the fascination of the book.  It’s well worth the investment.

My only negative is that the binding doesn’t seem quite up to the task of holding the high quality paper.  Only time will tell on that.  But this is definitely a worthy coffee table book that you’ll review time and again.
