Dear Darth Plagueis: It’s not you, it’s me

I don’t know why I was surprised when James Luceno’s Darth Plagueis failed to blow my mind.

I bought the book on the release date, but didn’t start it until last Monday – mainly because I knew I’d have to recap the Luceno Facebook chat on Wednesday and I didn’t want to be spoiled for what folks on Twitter were labeling AMAZING REVELATIONS. So I forced myself through it in two days.

And I was not blown away. The revelations? Not that amazing. To me, anyway.

Live-action series rumor du jour: There’s time travel!

It’s been a while since we’ve had a silly rumor about the Star Wars live-action series to giggle over, but thankfully there’s Ain’t It Cool News to get things going. Today: Time travel! No, really:

Daniel tells us that one of the series’ first episodes will involve a group of bandits acquiring the capability of time travel, and using it to travel back in time to stop Darth Vader from ever existing.

Sounds like someone’s been watching a bit too much Terminator! Thanks, AICN. Glad to know you’re there when we need a laugh. (via)

‘Women don’t read sci-fi’ incites chaos on Twitter

What started out as a lovely tribute to the awesomeness of A Wrinkle in Time has ignited a hashtag frenzy on Twitter.

In the article, Pamela Paul, a children’s book editor at The Book Review, cites some sad surveys that indicate the number of women who identify as reading sci-fi is depressingly low.

So rather than talking about the book, the statistics got Twitter going.  The hashtag #womenreadSF has gotten the geek women on Twitter recommending all sorts of awesome titles and authors.

In the face of these depressing statistics, what would you recommend? Do you try to engage the girls in your life with some good sci-fi?

Oregon Jedi wannabe gets jail time

David Allen Canterbury, the man who attacked customers with lightsabers at an Oregon Toys R Us, has been sentenced to 45 days in jail and a mental health evaluation that could lead to treatment. He pleaded no contest to charges of fourth-degree assault and resisting arrest, while the judge dismissed charges of of interfering with a police officer, theft and disorderly conduct.

Canterbury has a previous conviction for possession of heroin.

Out this week: Phantom Menace reissue, Millennium Falcon Owner’s Workshop Manual

Coming today is a new edition of Terry Brooks’ The Phantom Menace novelization, which contains a new short story, ‘End Game,’ by James Luceno. Like the rerelease of Darth Maul: Shadow Hunter a few weeks back, this edition doesn’t have a new ISBN, so your best bet would be to pick it up in person to make sure you’ve got the right version.

If you’d rather pick up something brand new, also out today is The Millennium Falcon Owner’s Workshop Manual by Ryder Windham, Chris Reiff and Chris Trevas.

Meanwhile, Wednesday is a good day to head out to the comic shop, due to the presence of Dawn of the Jedi #0 on the shipping list this week.

It’s also about time to be keeping an eye out for the latest Star Wars Insider, #131, which a Millennium Falcon story by Star Wars newcomers David J. Williams and Mark S. Williams.
