Rumor: Guess who’s back in Episode VII? (Tell a friend.)

George Lucas and Ian McDiarmid on set, chillin' like a Time LordLatino Review came out in the middle of the night to add a new wrinkle to Sith-based rumor packet: That Palpatine will be back, but he won’t be the same, i.e. played by Ian McDiarmid. This isn’t the first time we’ve heard something like this, though previous rumors (including one from Latino Review themselves) mostly pointed towards McDiarmid and a Force Ghost situation.

Cue another round of tedious Dark Empire analogies and angst, but personally I’m just going to give this go the full batshit: Palpatine is Time Lord. He regenerates. Pass it on.

Episode VII catchup: Speculating on how the Empire fits in

mcquarrie-star-destroyer→ Some rumor-based speculation on the Empire in Episode VII from Making Star Wars.

→ The always controversial Devin Faraci on how what he’s heard about Episode VII has made him stop worrying and love Star Wars again. He also had some fairly sound things to say on the EU issue yesterday on Twitter.

→ And finally, Harrison Ford was spotted on a “2,500 foot mega-slide” in Wyoming this week, while actor Brendan Gleeson admitted he didn’t originally get the hype when son Domhnall was cast.

Video: Gareth Edwards accepts ALS ice bucket challenge

We’ve already seen J.J. Abrams and Mary Franklin (first at the Yoda fountain!) do the challenge, but what’s really interesting here is that it’s pretty much the first official Lucasfilm recognition (Star Wars uploaded the video) that Rian Johnson is on board. No one really doubts it at this point: Johnson’s rep has confirmed, he’s clearly had permission to be out there talking like it’s a done deal, but the lack of an official announcement has been puzzling.

Celebrities are doing the ice bucket challenge to raise money to fight Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, also known as Lou Gehrig’s disease.

DragonCon’s Star Wars activities will include Aloha for Aaron Allston Day

Dragon Con is coming up Labor Day Weekend. Once again, the center of Star Wars activity will be the Star Wars at Dragon Con track. On Sunday, August 31st, the track is asking fans to wear Aloha shirts in honor of one of Aaron Allston‘s favorite wardrobe features.

That same day at 5:30pm in Hyatt International North, there will be a tribute panel to Aaron and A. C. Crispin, who lost her battle with cancer since the last Dragon Con.

Other fun Star Wars activities coming up this year include:

  • Last Party on Alderaan – Party like it’s the end of the world at what is arguably Dragon Con’s best club dance.
  • Suits, Sinatra and Star Wars Mixer – A new event that will give you the excuse to wear your best Star Wars fabric suit or Rat Pack fashion and meet fellow fans.
  • The Empire Striketh Back Table Read – A “dramatic,” or at the very least amusing, table read of Ian Doescher’s next installment in his Shakespeare’s Star Wars series.
  • An Hour with Sam Witwer – Our own Bryan Young interviews actor Sam Witwer about his love of Star Wars and his roles as Starkiller and Darth Maul on The Clone Wars.

Coming back will be the Podraces for the kids. And, as always, lots of discussion about the movies, collectibles and books.

For the most up-to-date happenings, be sure to download the Dragon Con app.
