Harrison Ford had an AMA on Reddit this afternoon as part of the promotion for the Showtime documentary Years of Living Dangerously. This was more brief and less focused on Star Wars (and guacamole) than Mark Hamill’s a few months back, but Ford did answer several Star Wars and Indiana Jones questions.
He was gracious:
Someone said thank you for being a part of so many childhood films: Well, thank you. I really appreciate that. It’s a privilege to be able to be involved with people as talented as the people I’ve had the luck to work with, and it’s just been a great experience for me, and I’m glad that so many of the films I’ve had the luck to do were films that could be enjoyed by families together.
But he doesn’t care who shot first. No, really:
I don’t know and I don’t care.
How was he approached for and how did he feel about Star Wars at first?
I was approached with the offer of a job, which at that point, was all I wanted to hear. I had helped George Lucas audition other actors for the principle parts, and with no expectation or indication that I might be considered for the part of Han, I was quite surprised when I was offered the part. My principle job at the time was carpentry, I had been under contract as an actor at Columbia and Universal. I had a house at the time I wanted to remodel, a bit of the wreck of a house. I’d invest money in tools but wouldn’t have money for materials, so I realized this was another way of putting food on the table. And allowing me to pick and choose from the acting jobs that were being offered at the time.
On the legend of “I know” being an ad-lib.
It’s not really an ad lib, it was a suggestion, and movie making’s a real collaborative process at its best. You don’t ad lib it, you suggest it and then you try something in rehearsal and then you agree. So it was my suggestion, because I thought it was more of a character line than what was written, but the director and Carrie and I all thought it was a good idea at the time so we did it.
Who would win a fight: Indiana Jones or Han Solo?
The promoter would win.
On the (possible) Blade Runner sequel and the original’s ambiguous ending; It was also the hardest set he’s ever been on. His most lengthy movie-centric answer was on Indiana Jones filming injuries and “get off my plane,” is his most requested quote.
He also said that being a part of two iconic film series like Star Wars and Indiana Jones was “incredibly lucky;” He actually likes snakes; Who would win a in a fight, him or Mark? His ‘feud’ with Chewbacca; his favorite cheese; on choosing projects; David Blaine’s card trick; his pets; advice for aspiring actors.
And, of course, he knows.
Is that facial hair a spoiler?
You know…in the larger version of that picture, you can clearly see that the chair next to his says “CA…”
A quick IMDB check says that the other movie he’s currently filming, “The Age of Adeline,” has no major cast member with those first two letters in their name.
Curious. ;)
There is a Cate (not the Cate, but a Cate) in that cast, though. Minor, yes, but still. She’s apparently playing the young version of Ellen Burstyn’s character. No idea where Ford fits into that movie – his character doesn’t even have a name on IMDB! But it IS for sure filming with principles now, which we can’t say for sure on EpVII. (Filming yes, with principal actors? No clue.) So someone better rule Cate out before assuming it’s Carrie’s chair. ;)
True. And I also realized (hey, it’s early), that – in what would be an ultimate troll job – it could be his wife’s chair. Like, weird Hollywood patio furniture or something. ;)
It’s TOTALLY Callista’s.
