With Episode IX due to begin filming on August 1, let’s take a look back at our first official dispatches from the set of The Force Awakens.
The clapperboard photo (#dayone) was tweeted by @bad_robot on May 16, 2014, while an official video for Omaze/Force for Change featuring director J.J. Abrams and the creature we now know as BobbaJo arrived on May 21.
Will we get any early goodies for Episode IX? It’s hard to say, as The Force Awakens was the first live-action Star Wars movie in a decade, so not everything in their playbook is going to apply. (That said, I will certainly keep an eye out for tweets!)
The Last Jedi debuted actual behind the scenes footage when they announced the cast (February 15, 2016), but they’d also had to head out early to film on Skellig Micheal in September 2015 – before TFA had even premiered – something we have no indication of happening for IX. Force for Change videos directly from the set have been rare since, with the last one coming early on for Solo, with Warwick Davis and original directors Christopher Miller and Phil Lord.
