GateGeek – Atlantis Fall-Out

So a great hue and cry has gone up from the ranks of fans with much anger directed at both SciFi and MGM for cancelling Atlantis.  And there are the inevitable sites going up as the fans work through the grief process.  However, the producers are saying that it was a mutual decision in order to launch the Stargate Atlantis movies while the brand was still strong.

Joe Mallozzi shares that the cast and crew were told before word leaked out.  (A bit of a rarity, in this day and age.)  And he also shares that the 100th and last episode will not be a cliffhanger, as previously reported, but should leave us wanting more.

David Hewlett Twittered that he’s a bit bummed, but is philosophical about the actor’s life.  No official word, yet, from the other main actors.

On the happier side of Stargate news, although the producers aren’t yet acknowledging it, The Hollywood Reporter is saying that the new series Stargate Universe has been greenlighted.  (Although anytime someone in Hollywood says “younger vibe,” I get nervous.)  So…new series and movies from the prior ones!

And tonight’s episode, The Shrine, is getting huge buzz as being one of the most moving of the series.

It should be an interesting Dragon*Con next weekend!

GateGeek – So long, Atlantis, and thanks for the Wraith

The ugly rumors racing around the net yesterday have turned out to be true:  Stargate Atlantis will end its run with its fifth season.

Even though the “+7” numbers (live viewings, plus DVRs, etc.) have consistently run higher, SciFi apparently prefers its “live” numbers to be the deciding factor.  And Stargate has never been good at that.  (Thanks a lot, techno-geeks!)

We can comfort ourselves with movies on the way to wrap up the cliff-hanger and bring us a few more adventures.  And there are lots of intriguing projects from the cast and the production company in the pipeline.  But don’t be surprised to see another fan campaign start up, either.  Not that SciFi has ever responded to that….

GateGeek – Weekend Goodness

You might have heard of a little shindig over the weekend called Comic-Con.  There was some Stargate representation.

Not to be outdone by events in San Diego, Joe Mallozzi’s blog features some fun entries:

  • Joe telling us all about his thinking (and some missing pieces) in last Friday’s episode Broken Ties
  • Rob Cooper braves some not-always-nice questions from fen about Stargate SG1.

SDCC ’08: Saturday and Sunday at the con

While I don’t doubt there were still plenty of Star Wars fans still roaming around Saturday and Sunday, with most of the panels being on Friday there wasn’t much new floating around. Well, except for the Mandalorian wedding. (Oye vey.) And Cinematical posted a brief review of Fanboys. And the official site has more pictures, of course, while Rebelscum continues exhaustively documenting the booths and products of every licensee.

Gate Geek – Things to do while NOT at Comic-Con

In order to keep with the Comic-Con theme, I will actually start out with news from Comic-Con. Then I’ll go to stuff to entertain those of us not there, this week. (Not that I’m bitter, or anything.)

  • Stargate Continuum had its world premiere on Thursday. On the deck of a carrier. (How cool is that?)
  • Not to be outdone, Joe Mallozzi counterprograms with a guest appearance on his blog by VFX guru (and Emmy nominee) Mark Savela. Cool pictures and he brings clips!
  • GateWorld waits for Friday’s Stargate panels by posting an interview with the great Robert Picardo. A wee bit on the spoilery side, but Picardo’s just so much fun.
  • The official site posts a story about last week’s episode in which Jewel Staite talks about the joys of living in a latex cage for four days.
  • And, finally, Alex Levine gets Joe Mallozzi to share some of his excitement about tonight’s episode, Broken Ties. Jason Mamoa apparently gives a performance not to be missed.

SDCC ’08: Wolverine, Watchmen, BSG

TEASER: Wolverine

Jamie Bamber Sheds a Tear

E!’s Watch with Kristin spoke to BSG’s Jamie Bamber about the oddness of closing out Battlestar’s run on a second unit shoot.  But he also admits that tears were shed at the read-through.  (Interpret as you will.)

He also shares some about his future with BSG and the upcoming Law & Order – London.  (Complete with cute accent.)
