Entertainment Weekly’s Michael Ausiello has confirmed that Emmy host Neil Patrick Harris will be part of a “Dr. Horrible-themed production” tonight. Horrible picked up a Creative Arts Emmy last week. (If you haven’t seen it by now, we’ll have to revoke your geek card. Sorry.) Also appearing? John Hodgman. This could be the most nerdalicious Emmys ever!
Gate Geek – SGU Ready to Launch
There is such an avalanche of Stargate Universe coverage starting that there’s no way to cover it all. Besides, most of them are spoilery and I’m living partway in the Spoiler Cave, right now.
A nice, spoiler-free review was given by Wired magazine. Yet another who thinks it’s a strong and interesting show; even for those who have never watched Stargate.
Tons of new content on SyFy and the official site, if you want to be teased further. SGU starts October 2nd with a 3-parter.

Star Trek and Heroes actor George Takei will be going on The Newlywed Game with his husband, Brad Altman.

Gate Geek: io9 has seen Universe and it is good….
And lo, io9 got to see the first three hours of Stargate Universe. And it was good. They even managed to write a spoiler-free review about it.
In a nutshell, it’s not your regular Stargate, but it still has it as its core. And they ask you to give it at least until the end of the third hour until you decide for yourself. Plenty of stuff for “Gaters” to get riled about; which “Gaters” love to do. (Can I be not a fan of the whole “Gaters” designation, though?)
At Dragon*Con, I got the chance to speak briefly with Gary Jones (aka Walter “Chevron Counting Guy” Harriman) who has been there during production and even saw some preliminary cuts. He thinks we’re going to love it if we give it a chance.
TV news: HBO’s A Game of Thrones gets their queen(s)
HBO’s A Game of Thrones adaption has announced casting for many of the major roles since we last checked in. But the one making the most waves online since Sean Bean is the news that Lena Headey will play Cersai Lannister, the ambitious wife of King Robert Baratheon (Mark Addy) and a main foil of the series. Headey is plenty familiar to genre fans from her turn as the title character in The Sarah Conner Chronicles and as Queen Gorgo in 300. (Or maybe even 2005’s The Brothers Grimm, as seen at right.) Here’s hoping she can pull it off.
Other familiar faces include Jennifer Ehle (Pride and Prejudice ’95) as Catelyn Stark, Nikolaj Coster-Waldau (New Amsterdam, Virtuality) as Cersei’s brother Jaime Lannister, Iain Glen (Kingdom of Heaven) as Ser Jorah Mormont, and Tamzin Merchant (The Tudors) as Daenerys Targaryen. Check out George R. R. Martin’s blog for more on the younger actors.
- SyFy. Warehouse 13 is setting records for the recently remonikered network; the show’s sixth episode was the most-watched series telecast in the channel’s history. It beat out… Episode five of the same series! Huh. In less hopeful rumors, they’re reportedly considering a cooking show. ‘Imagine greater’ indeed.
- MTV. Their Rocky Horror remake is “on hold,” (phew) but they are looking to reinvent Teen Wolf. Okay…
- Disney/Marvel. Has the New Mouse Order claimed its first victim?
- Supernatural. Creator Eric Kripke hedges around ending the series. Err, story. Err… Buffy lives?
- The Vampire Diaries. The CW is promoting their upcoming vampire drama with blood drives around the country.
- Just for fun. io9 has captured many of 30 Rock’s salutes to the genre.
GateGeek: Stargate Universe trailer hits theaters and the hype grows
Okay. If you saw the trailer online before, nothing much has really changed. But MGM is putting this trailer into theaters, which means they’re really trying to get the hype rolling for the impending October 2nd air date:

And then there’s the press blitz which has kicked off with some exclusive SyFy interviews with David Blue and Lou Diamond Phillips. Ming Na (who is also a major geek; especially for Star Wars) has also indicated that she’s been doing a lot of press.
Yes, for all of you loudly complaining about how you plan on boycotting SGU, you’re just going to have to avoid the media for a while. I’m pretty psyched, though, if I can just stay away from spoilers!
Scalzi stirs it up again with Star Trek design failures
His take on Star Wars brought the laughs and riled up the humorless fanboys of the world. We can only hope his take on Star Trek design will do the same.
Weekend poll: DVD vs. Blu-Ray vs. the internet
I’m not generally an early adopter when it comes to this sort of technology, so the recent focus on Blu-Ray has kind of thrown me for a loop. DVDs were certainly a vast improvement over VHS, but what’s so wonderful about Blu-Ray? (My TV is okay, but mere DVDs still look fantastic on my parent’s giant flat-screen.) And while I prefer to watch TV from my couch, I can’t deny that I’ll head to the internet if it has the shows I really want to see. (Though only if I really want them… I still haven’t watched any classic Star Trek.) So I was wondering about you guys… What are your preferred formats? Gate Geek – The Endings and The Beginnings
David Hewlett (Rodney McKay) is fairly convinced that the lack of contact with the show’s producers means there will be no Atlantis movie. And it makes him sad.
But the newbies to the franchise are enjoying the hype that comes with a new (and still supported) show at the Television Critics Association:
- The ladies get caught doing Wookiee impressions (two e’s people…geez)
- David Blue outs himself…as a geek (no surprise to anyone following his Tweets) and Lou Diamond Phillips scores the biggest laugh of the panel in this summary.
- And the producers try changing tacks from the earliest marketing disaster to saying they’re trying to “broaden” the Stargate appeal.
