Rian Johnson, Mark Hamill on The Last Jedi behind-the-scenes

Rian Johnson and (eventually) Mark Hamill showed up at SXSW for The Director and the Jedi, and you can watch their Q&A, or check out The Hollywood Reporter’s article, which highlights my favorite Rian Johnson quote re: Luke. (The post-screening Q&A is this way.)

If you’re waiting for the Blu-ray, here’s a few more clips: Luke’s struggle, above, plus Mark Hamill and Frank Oz reunite, Paige Tico and the bomber attack and the gorilla walkers. Meanwhile, also check out Mike Ryan’s observations on Johnson’s commentary.

StarWars.com has an interview with puppeteer Brian Herring, one of the BB-8 operators, who also worked with the porgs in The Last Jedi.

Carrie, crystal foxes and more in latest The Last Jedi behind the scenes featurettes

A few new behind the scenes clips have emerged since we last checked in. The first, on Kylo’s choice to not kill Leia, features a new priceless quote from Carrie Fisher. The second is on the crystal foxes (err, vulptices), finally giving us a long-awaited look at the actual dog-wearing-straw-costume used to help develop them. And from yesterday, how a Ralph McQuarrie painting from Empire inspired the final showdown and a bit on the red of Crait.

No Academy Awards for The Last Jedi

The Last Jedi failed to break Star Wars‘ 34-year streak at the Oscars, losing in all four categories it was nominated in. Both sound awards went to Dunkirk, Blade Runner 2049 took VFX, and John Williams lost out on score to Alexandre Desplat for The Shape of Water.

The Shape of Water was the night’s big winner, taking home four Oscars, including Best Picture and Best Director for Guillermo del Toro.

Oscar Isaac, Mark Hamill, Kelly Marie Tran and BB-8 did present Best Animated Short and Feature, the highlight being BB-8 getting scratchies:

Kelly’s Instagram is worth a look though, and Mark Hamill was out doing his thing on the red carpet. Lupita Nyong’o and Laura Dern were also in attendance.

No Star Wars film has received an Oscar since 1984, when Return of the Jedi was awarded a Special Achievement Award for Visual Effects. But hey, we did get to see a porg on the Oscars, so that’s something.

The Last Jedi making-of documentary to premiere at SXSW

The Director and the Jedi, a look at Rian Johnson and the making of The Last Jedi, will have its World Premiere on March 12 during South by Southwest in Austin.

“We had [Anthony Wonke] & his crew on set every day, we were always radio mic’d up,” Johnson tweeted. “This isn’t talking heads & b-roll, it really gets into process & captures what the shoot felt like. Excited to see it with a crowd…”

An intimate documentary delving into Rian Johnson’s process as he comes in as a director new to the Star Wars universe. A fan since childhood, he sets out to make the most powerful Star Wars movie he can. Navigating the mammoth production, the scale of which he’s never directed before, we meet his cast and crew, see their individual challenges in bringing the film together, say goodbye to Carrie Fisher, and explore the significance of Rian’s more surprising decisions.

The documentary gives you a view of what it really was like to make “The Last Jedi”. As the team strive to do their best, what shines through is their passion and how memorable an experience it is for Rian as director.

The rest of us will be able to see the documentary as part of The Last Jedi’s home release on March 13 and 27.

The Force Awakens making-of documentary also premiered at SXSW back in 2016.
