When most folks think of Star Wars at Disneyland Resort in California, they think of the Star Tours ride, and maybe also the Star Trader shop and the Jedi Training show for children. But now, Star Wars has fully invaded Tomorrowland during the Season of the Force event. I got a chance to bring the whole Jawa family to Disneyland to experience Season of the Force as well as some of the other holiday festivities at the Park.
While winter brings the cold across much of the U.S., southern California stays snow-free near the coast – except at LEGOLAND California in Carlsbad. The theme park puts on its annual winter celebration, Holiday Snow Days and Winter Nights, and Baby Jawa, Grandma Jawa and I got the opportunity to check it out. This was a big treat for baby girl as it was her first time in the snow! Plus we got a chance to see Star Wars miniland and the rest of the park.
Why marketers fear the female geek. It’s an older article (as well as a gaming one,) but it checks out. For instance: “We create opportunity by being vocal. We voice our frustration with how things currently are and progressive marketers will see an unsatisfied customer base… We have to keep being visible.”
Weird Al is releasing songs and videos from his new album every day this week, and this one really speaks to me. (Us?) Particularly the bit about Prince. And it’s really nice to have a version of ‘Blurred Lines’ that isn’t Xizor levels of skeevy.
Her Universe will be adding three new licenses this summer, Ashley Eckstein tells Legion of Leia. Aside from Star Wars, Her Universe already has licenses for Doctor Who, Star Trek and The Walking Dead. (Syfy Channel is no longer on their site – expired?) Who do you hope will join them?
James Arnold Taylor is more than just the voice of Obi-Wan Kenobi and other characters on The Clone Wars! If you’ve followed the veteran voice actor on social media, you’ve seen his tidbits of inspiration for everyday life. Now Taylor has compiled a book of his daily doses of positive attitude to help provide that extra boost of good vibes for each day of a year. In JAT 365: 365 Daily Inspirations for the Pursuit of Your Dreams, Taylor delivers a tool for daily progress in working towards one’s dreams. I take a look inside and see what JAT 365 is all about. With Thor: The Dark Work on the horizon, Marvel and star Natalie Portman are launching the Ultimate Mentor Adventure to inspire more girls to explore STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics) fields. Girls 14 and up are eligible to apply. UL (Underwriters Laboratories), Dolby Laboratories, National Academy of Sciences and Girl Scouts USA are also sponsoring the effort.
Portman, who reprises her role as astrophysicist Jane Foster in the film, also had some interesting things to say about female characters:
“I want them to be allowed to be weak and strong and happy and sad – human, basically. The fallacy in Hollywood is that if you’re making a ‘feminist’ story, the woman kicks ass and wins. That’s not feminist, that’s macho. A movie about a weak, vulnerable woman can be feminist if it shows a real person that we can empathize with.”
So tomorrow is the 30th anniversery of the release of Return of the Jedi: Why not experiment? Bria over at White Hot Room has a tutorial on how to create Leia’s Endor braids.
Last week, my Fan Force chapter made a club trip to see the Indiana Jones and the Adventure of Archaeology exhibition at the Discovery Science Center in Santa Ana, California. Nearly finished with its first American stop, the exhibition is great for both fans of the Indiana Jones films and fans of archaeology, and I’d advise going to check it out before it finishes up on April 21, or catch it at a tour stop near you. X3 Productions, the company behind the Indiana Jones exhibition (as well as Star Wars Identities), has let me know that there are more exhibition stops coming, and to watch for an announcement very soon. I’m a big fan of the Indy films, and a lover of archaeology, history and anthropology (and thus museums as well), so this was a trip I had been eager to organize and take. Here’s what the Indy exhibit had to offer: Continue reading “Visiting the Indiana Jones and the Adventure of Archaeology museum exhibition”
Since we know that this embarrasses her beyond belief, I’m going to jump on here to say congratulations to Club Jade’s own Dunc for being selected as a Her Universe Fangirl of the Day!
My favorite part of the write-up:
What is her favorite quote or personal motto?
“In space, no one can hear you LOL.”
Club Jade knows who has made this site great, and that’s Dunc. Thanks for all you do setting the example for how women can navigate fandom with fun and class (and snark).
Grace and Lillian might be familiar faces to Her Universe fans on our blog, since they were in the HU fan photoshoot at Celebration last year. Keep watching the Fangirl of the Day blog for more stories from the fandom community!
