Wear Star Wars Every Day: Week 16

Here’s the week in review for #WearStarWarsEveryDay! No new donations to Collateral Repair Project this week, but I celebrated the Star Wars Dark Side Half and then kicked off my run of Star Wars Celebration wear as it was the anniversary of Star Wars Celebration Anaheim! Some of that Celebration apparel, two shirts and a hat, was donated by Kristen! This review for Week 16 covers April 15 to April 21 of my wearathon, and an update on fundraising for Collateral Repair Project, a non-profit organization that provides emergency assistance, education, and community support to urban refugees.

How long will my Celebration streak last? Will I make it to April 30, the day that the first Celebration started in 1999? If you have a favorite clothing item from Celebration that you want to let me borrow, better send it quick! Also, I want to turn May into a showcase of Star Wars fandom, highlighting different fan efforts such as websites, podcasts, costume clubs, collecting clubs, artwork, etc. So if you’ve got something cool to donate or lend, like a club shirt, hat or costume item, send it on over, and I’ll promote your fandomness. Get the shipping info here.

In pledge news, my push to increase the per-day total pledge is still at $4.15/day, but there’s also another way to support my continued effort – you can sign up for monthly giving on the GoFundMe! In week 15, an anonymous donor has started with $10/month. This is like adding another $0.33 per day, and it is automatically set up, just as easy as making a one-time donation! So help me out, and make a per-day pledge!

Wear Star Wars Every Day: Week 15

#WearStarWarsEveryDay has now completed 15 weeks! In this update on my charity fundraising project, I cover Day 100! We had two one-time donations this week (Abdul and Anonymous), putting the GoFundMe up over $1,100! Plus, this week most of the clothes I wore were lent by three people: MediocreJedi, Margaret, and Christian. Plus I announce the winner of the prize drawing for the Poe Dameron cover version of Star Wars Insider #146! Is it you? This review for Week 15 covers April 8 to April 14 of my wearathon, and an update on fundraising for Collateral Repair Project, a non-profit organization that provides emergency assistance, education, and community support to urban refugees.

Going into week 16, I’ve started a run of Celebration apparel, in honor of the one-year anniversary of Celebration Anaheim, so if you have a favorite clothing item from Celebration that you want to let me borrow, better send it quick! I’m also planning to turn the month of May into a streak of fan clothes, highlighting different fan efforts such as websites, podcasts, costume clubs, collecting clubs, artwork, etc. So if you’ve got something cool to donate or lend, send it on over, and I’ll promote your fandomness. Wear Star Wars Every Day: Week 14

The first week of April puts #WearStarWarsEveryDay all the way up to Day 99! We had three one-time donations this week (Rachel, Joel, and Anonymous), putting the GoFundMe up over $1,050! Plus, this week most of the clothes I wore were lent or donated by three people: Patty, Kristen, and MediocreJedi. Thank you so much for this boost to kick off April! This update for Week 14 covers April 1 to April 7 of my wearathon, and an update on fundraising for Collateral Repair Project, a non-profit organization that provides emergency assistance, education, and community support to urban refugees.

SWI_164_SUBSCOVERThe prize drawing for the Poe Dameron Star Wars Insider is still open! Donate and you could win a copy of the subscriber-exclusive version of Star Wars Insider #164, with Poe Dameron on the cover. An anonymous friend has offered this magazine to one lucky random person who donates to the GoFundMe from April 1 to April 15. So make a donation today!

I’m also still looking to increase the per-day total pledge. With your help, it has risen to $4.15/day but I’d still like to get it up to $5. So help me out, and make a per-day pledge! If you sign up for a pledge before April 15, I will let you start your donation at April 1, instead of going all the way back to January 1, when I started this effort. So please, please, please, help Collateral Repair Project out!

The weird and wacky history of Star Wars slash

anh-luke-han

We had The Atlantic looking at The Force Awakens fan fiction last week, but now there’s a historical look-back at slash in the fandom from Lady Business at Livejournal. Behold! Fans actually asking permission to fandom! Letters from the fan club president! “Fandom is about celebrating the story the way it is.”

The spectre of all this was still hanging over fandom when I first found it in the ’90s, believe it or not. (Or maybe I just knew a lot of zine folks in the Star Ladies.) It wasn’t until after The Phantom Menace – and the huge and (officially*) uncontested slash fandom that came out of it – that the paranoia eased.

* There were flame wars. Oh, were there flame wars. But Lucasfilm stayed out of it. Slash bans – like the infamous one at TheForce.Net’s Jedi Council forums that was only removed last year – were solely coming from fansite owners and operators.

Wear Star Wars Every Day: Week 13 & chance to win Poe!

The end of March is a successful week for #WearStarWarsEveryDay, and we are one-quarter of the way through 2016! We had two one-time donations this week (Anonymous & Chris) and two people answered my call for per-day pledges (Maliha & Anonymous) so we are up to $4.15 per day! Plus, this week most of the clothes I wore were lent or donated by three people: Patty, PG, and Brian. Thank you so much for this boost at the end of the quarter! This update for Week 13 covers March 25 to March 31 of my wearathon, and an update on fundraising for Collateral Repair Project, a non-profit organization that provides emergency assistance, education, and community support to urban refugees.

SWI_164_SUBSCOVEROne hell of a pilot!

If you can spare a dime each day or a quarter each day or even more, I would really appreciate it, and I bet Collateral Repair Project and the refugees they provide assistance to would also appreciate it. And if you sign up for a pledge before April 15, I will let you start your donation at April 1, instead of going all the way back to January 1, when I started this effort. So please, please, please, help Collateral Repair Project out! If I continue to the end of the year, a dime a day for the last 9 months will only be $27.70.

This Is Madness: Hondo picks the Fate of Four

thisIsMadness2016-finalfour

I have returned, once again, to guide you with my wisdom. Yes, your fearless captain, Hondo Ohnaka, is back to tell you who to pick in the starwars.com ‘This Is Madness’ character tournament in the penulti… pe… second to last round. This round will decide which light side character and which dark side character will face off to see who the champion is.

Team Hondo 2016On both sides, we have a bunch of those laser-sword wielding Jedi and Sith. For the light side, it’s Luke Skywalker against Rey. And right now, Luke has the lead against Rey. Both grew up on the Outer Rim without their parents, only to be shown a larger galaxy by a mentor who was killed by a Sith in a mask, and then started to learn about their Jedi skills. Also, both are good pilots. But I think I will pick Rey, because she had a tougher lot – Luke had his uncle and aunt and got to live on a farm. Rey had no one and lived in a crashed walker. That can’t be good for your back. Plus she can fly the Falcon, which I hear is a pretty good ship. Not as good as one of my ships, but perhaps close. So Rey.

On the dark side, there’s Darth Vader and his grandson Kylo Ren. And Vader has a big lead right now. So I’m going to go with that. I think Kylo will probably get mad though, and smash up some stuff. Or punch his side to get him pumped up to smash some stuff. But Vader – I hear he just fought off his apprentice, Ahsoka Tano, and she is a serious Jedi. or serious former Jedi. And my friend. So I don’t like Vader at all, but I do respect him from a distance. Vader.

And for the finals. I’m going to assume that Darth Vader wins the dark side. If he goes against Luke Skywalker, I say vote Luke, because as you know, Luke beat his father at Endor, and that counts. If he goes against Rey, I say vote Rey, because I don’t want Vader to win. Yes, just vote for the light side, since they are more likely to not put me out of business.
