Dark Horse teams up Star Wars, Firefly and Zack Whedon for Free Comic Book Day

No, it’s not a crossover, sadly. But you do get two-in-one: A Han and Chewbacca story shares a flip book with the Serenity folks, both tales penned by Zack Whedon (he co-wrote Dr. Horrible’s Sing-Along Blog with brothers Joss and Jed.) And Dark Horse will offer another flip book with Buffy the Vampire Slayer and The Guild. (via)

Free Comic Book is, as always, the first Saturday in May: This year, that means May 5, 2012. You’ll be able to find a participating comic shop near you with the Comic Shop Locator.

Out this week: Knight Errant, At War omnibus

Wednesday brings Knight Errant: Deluge #4 to comic shops, the second-to-last issue of the arc. Also from Dark Horse is a new omnibus, At War with the Empire volume 2, which contains select issues of Empire and Rebellion. (Take it away, Wookieepedia!)

Meanwhile, next week brings our last novel of the year: Shadow Games by Michael Reaves and Maya Kaathryn Bohnhoff. Fear not, holiday shoppers: It’s a paperback.

EUbits: A look at Essential Guide to Warfare art

Essential art. Del Rey’s Erich Schoeneweiss gave fans a first look at some of the art from The Essential Guide to Warfare. They include an “an ancient battle between the Rakatans and the Killiks” by Darren Tan, an OTish space battle by Paul Youll (who did the covers for the X-Wing novels), and a Dark Empire World Devastator by Stephan Martiniere.

Street date shuffle. Speaking of X-Wings, Schoeneweiss also gave us a solid date for Aaron Allston’s Mercy Kill: August 7. Our schedule has been updated.

Interview. Author Drew Karpyshyn talks Revan at Suvudu.

Out this week: Revan and Invasion

Coming out tomorrow is our second-to-last Star Wars novel of the year, Drew Karpyshyn’s The Old Republic: Revan. In the meantime, you can check out a 50-page excerpt or a spoiler-free review from Pete at Lightsaber Rattling. Or, if you’ve been sitting around and boggling at the excitement this novel has been generating, here’s some psuedo-learning for you instead: All the Darths by Dan Wallace.

Showing up in comic shops on Wednesday will be Invasion: Revelations #5.

Our next book, coming up on the 29th, will be Shadow Games by Michael Reaves and Maya Kaathryn Bohnhoff.

Del Rey, Dark Horse and LFL meet to discuss the EU future

Last week, folks from Del Rey and Dark Horse were at Lucasfilm to discuss future Expanded Universe projects. Frank Parisi shared a tease from Del Rey, and new editor Jennifer Heddle tweeted that she’s “Feeling very energized about SW publishing!” There’s also an interview with Heddle at Suvudu, though note it does predate the big meeting.

Hopefully this means we’ll be seeing more news trickling out in the coming months… The cupboard has been pretty bare lately!

Highlights of today’s chat with author Paul S. Kemp

The Star Wars Books Facebook page hosted a chat with author Paul S. Kemp this evening. Kemp is the author of last year’s Crosscurrent, The Old Republic: Deceived, and the just-released Riptide. Warning: This chat will contain some spoilers for all three of his books. I’ve tried to contain them to the last part here, but be warned: I might miss some, since I haven’t read any of them. Head beneath the cut to check it out the highlights. Continue reading “Highlights of today’s chat with author Paul S. Kemp”
