Hobbits thwarted again?

Peter Jackson and New Line finally seem to have kissed and made up and now the film adaptation of The Hobbit is in jeopardy again because of subprime? WTF?!?!

Wednesday afternoon, the Financial Times published a scoop breaking the news that funding for a slate of upcoming blockbuster movies may be delayed because of Wall Street’s current woes.

The studio in question is MGM: The movies on the list include “The Hobbit” and the next installments in both the Terminator and James Bond sagas.

It seems that in recent years Hollywood has moved to a relatively new financing model in which it raises funding for a slate of upcoming films by having investment banks tap the pockets of private equity funds, hedge funds and institutional investors. In this case, MGM had contracted with Goldman Sachs and Deutsche Bank to raise as much as a billion dollars.

But all these heavy hitters play with other people’s money, and right now, the cost of borrowing that money has shot up. Access to credit has withered. Buyout and merger action has come to a screeching halt. The initial impetus for this crunch came from homeowners failing to make their mortgage payments, but the damage is spreading far and wide.

I’m sure our resident economists even understand what that actually means. I think in layperson’s terms though it translates down to more delays. Grrr! Argh!

More Gatey Goodness!

Joe Mallozzi continues to share the love with the Stargate fans by posting pictures from filming of the latest Stargate Atlantis episode in production. And there are shots of a certain guest star rehearsing who will look just a wee bit familiar to SG1 fans. (Yeah, baybee!) And another guest star who has been requested by many of the SGA fans. (Another “yeah, baybee” from me!)

Needless to say, since this is filming for Season 4, this means that you could be a wee bit spoiled for Season 4. So don’t get whiny about it!

In semi-related news, SciFi posts a short interview with SG1 actorMichael Shanks in which he describes what is sure to be the “riveting” storyline for his upcoming SciFi Saturday movie MegaSnake.

Gee. You think this movie will have snakes in it?

SciFi Fall Lineup Announced

Time to program those TiVo’s. SciFi has put their fall line-up out for the world to see.

Stargate Atlantis will be premiering on September 28th in the Friday, 10pm timeslot. Per GateWorld, they’re actually planning to (shocker) run the season all the way through. (Dare to dream that there won’t be a six-month, ratings-plummeting break between halves!)

Battlestar Galactica geeks can take some solace that although Razor won’t premiere until November 24th, “mini-sodes” will be airing during Flash Gordon. (Hey. They have to try and salvage that show somehow!)

Dark Horse for November

Appearing on the Dark Horse site today, several November comics: Legacy #18, Dark Times #9, Knights of the Old Republic #23 and a KOTOR handbook.

Also: Another Boba Fett hardcover (how many of these things are there?), the first Dark Times collection and a ROTS photo comic I’ve given up trying to understand the whole Boba Fett phenomenon, but can someone explain to me the appeal of photo comics? Is it more than the thrill of seeing the same old photo stills and dialogue?

ETA: TFN has the actual solicitations, which include… A hardcover of Union? So they’re not pretending that whole era of the EU doesn’t exist? Shocking!
