It’s official: Episode VII release date is December 18, 2015

Star Wars logoEpisode VII will be the first actual Star Wars movie not to open in May, StarWars.com announced today. The film will be in theaters December 18, 2015.

“We’re very excited to share the official 2015 release date for Star Wars: Episode VII, where it will not only anchor the popular holiday filmgoing season but also ensure our extraordinary filmmaking team has the time needed to deliver a sensational picture,” said Disney’s Alan Horn.

Rumors about a non-May release date have been rampant in the last few months.

Well, I can’t say I’m thrilled with a December release, but I am glad we finally have an official date and all the ridiculous fanboy posturing – over that part of the equation, anyway – is over. I’m sure they’ll still have a few things to share with that April at Celebration!

In some ways, it’ll be easier for me to go to a midnight showing/get time off work/figure out everything for a December premiere, but dang if it isn’t going to be weird.

Also, as someone who hasn’t bought Celebration tickets yet, but was thinking of going to my first Celebration in 2015, going in April actually feels less “special” now that it’s farther out from the premiere. Maybe that’s unfair, but I dunno.

This is great! Could there be a better christmas gift than a new Star Wars movie? Best. News. Ever.
(Although the whole lining up experience might freeze to death, but then again there’s always the option of slicing open a Tauntaun or two :-).)
This might even shut up my endless nagging over official news for a week or so. Good job, Lucasfilm/Disney. :-)

I can’t wait to see if this new trend of 9pm-the-evening-of showing continues (see: Ender’s Game, Catching Fire). That way all of us oldbies can be home and in bed by the time all the kids get started in on the midnight screenings. ;)

I’ll confess to being mildly disappointed about December rather than May (tradition!) but eh, not a big deal overall. Though, I really hope I don’t have a crazy concert schedule that weekend. December for musicians? CRAZY.

…aaaand I just earwormed myself with Fiddler on the Roof. Go me.

Well, now I know how I will be spending my birthday and my first college winter break.
A side note: They better start making 3-D glasses that fit over prescription glasses if they expect me to see it in 3-D.

@ HanLeiaSpock: Depending on what technology your theatre uses, those already exist. Just search for “clip on 3d glasses” on Amazon, and you should find what you are looking for. :-)
