J.K. Rowling has said that two characters will die in the seventh and final
“The final chapter is hidden away, although it’s now changed very slightly,” she said in an interview broadcast on Monday on Britain’s Channel 4. “One character got a reprieve, but I have to say two die that I didn’t intend to die.”
When asked to be more specific, she added: “No, I’m not going to commit myself, because I don’t want the hate mail or anything else.”
Oh, no! I don’t know if I could stand two more deaths. ::sniff::
But even worse? I don’t think I’ll be able to stand the years of HP fandom angst over the whole thing.
Some comments about the whole interview linked.
1. She says one character gets a reprieve and two she didn’t originally intend die. This doesn’t mean ONLY two die. It means two she originally didn’t intend to kill of die. I would think a hell of a lot more than two are gonna die.
2. She says she understands a writer’s temptation to kill off a character at the end so when she’s dead and gone no one can bring him back. Uh… hello… has she ever seen a soap opera? Even if she killed off Harry, there’s ALWAYS a way for someone to bring him back. If she does, guaranteed he’ll be ressurrected in more post-series fanfics than you can shake a wand at.
3. I think anyone is open game in this last book. I was never leery of losing Harry, Ron, or Hermione before book 7, but I think EVERYONE is a possible target now. Unless she wants to end with evil triumphing (which I doubt), I think Voldemort’s a sure bet. Harry and everyone else could go either way. But I hope she doesn’t kill off the top main characters. I’d like Harry, Hermione, and the Weasleys to all survive. (Except maybe Percy, the git.) ;)
Conan Doyle was forced (by the torrent of hate mail) to resurrect Holmes from a watery death at
Reichenbach Falls. I guess that JKR wants none of that.
Fans, though are certain to write the ending differently.
At any rate, I am of the theory that Harry will die, so that’s one. I think that one of the Weasleys, probably one of the twins, will also go. . .
