No, Tim Zahn is not under contract for two more Thrawn books

There was a bit of misinterpretation going on regarding something Timothy Zahn said at a con recently. Zahn himself sets the record straight: He has proposals, but not contracts, for two more Thrawn books… And he doesn’t know anything about Episode IX. It’s simply the nature of the franchise that movies will dictate the rest of the content. (And given that Thrawn went MIA in the Rebels finale, and there’s a brand new cartoon coming up… There are a lot of balls in the air even outside of the films that could have an impact on anything else regarding Thrawn.)

Zahn’s next Star Wars book, Thrawn: Alliances, will be out in July.

Star Wars out this week: DJ one-shot, Thrawn PB, Rose and Paige

It’s a big week for releases, at least by post/pre-movie standards: One novel re-release and three comics! On Tuesday, January 30, Timothy Zahn’s Thrawn is out in paperback. It has a sequel coming in July.

Then on Wednesday, January 31, our comics. The big ticket is The Last Jedi tie-in DJ #1 (with several variants). If you like your TLJ a little less neutral, there’s also Forces of Destiny: Rose and Paige. Or head back to the OT era with Doctor Aphra #16.

NYCC: Zahn writing a Thrawn sequel, Forces of Destiny comics coming

The big news out of the Star Wars literature panel at New York Comic Con? A Thrawn sequel from Timothy Zahn is coming next summer. Thrawn: Alliances will also feature Darth Vader, because why not, I guess.

Since Thrawn pretty much butts up against Thrawn’s appearance and new canon debut Rebels, there’s some speculation that the book could be set after the cartoon… Which could mean that he’ll survive the show’s final season. Maybe. In any case, the book is already in the hands of Del Rey.

It’s also up on the Random House catalog, where we get a brief – but illuminating – blurb.

The sequel to New York Times bestseller Thrawn, Thrawn: Alliances will continue to follow the rise of Grand Admiral Thrawn to the heights of Imperial power—and accompany him into the past, witnessing his first encounter with the man who will one day become Darth Vader.

The book is currently scheduled for a June 26, 2018 release in hardcover and eBook.

SDCC: Jason Fry is writing the The Last Jedi novelization, and other fiction news

A whole heap of Star Wars book news has come out of San Diego Comic-Con, some expected, some not. (This is all in addition to what we heard the other day!) Most are, naturally, tie-ins to The Last Jedi. We learned that longtime Star Wars writer Jason Fry is writing the Del Rey novelization of the film. Franchise newcomer Elizabeth Wein is writing Cobalt Squadron, “the harrowing story of the courageous bomber pilots and technicians of Cobalt Squadron.” The novel for young readers will feature Rose and Paige Tico.

Inferno Squadron exclusive coming to SDCC

Among the Star Wars exclusives for San Diego Comic-Con is a special edition of Christie Golden’s Battlefront II: Inferno Squadron. The book is officially out July 25, so this gives fans at the con (July 20-23) a few days jump on it, assuming they get there before it sells out. For now, there’s the first excerpt. The game’s star, Janina Gavankar, has an extended interview from her Star Wars Show apperance.

→ In addition to their Star Wars Adventures series, IDW will launch a with an 80-page The Force Awakens adaptation for young readers. It’s written by Alessandro Ferrari, with art from “a group of Disney artists.” Look for it in August.

Timothy Zahn talks writing and his latest Star Wars novel, Thrawn, with the New York Daily News. He reveals that he’s pitched two-more post-Thrawn novels on the character. (Though, as us Legends fans know, that doesn’t mean LFL will take him up on them.) He also has an extended version of his Star Wars Show interview.

Roundup: Star Wars is 40 today

I’ll be honest: I’m not really feeling much of the 40th Anniversary hullabaloo. (It’s… Okay. I guess? But aside from The Last Jedi stuff, much of it feels same-old-same-old to me.) But here are a few highlights:

→ io9 has debuted the Poe Dameron scale, the “ultimate Star Wars name-ranking system.” It made me giggle, so it must be worth your time.

→ Time has pictures of Star Wars fans from back in the day, including several women and girls.

→ Wired ranks Star Wars hair, a topic near and dear to my heart. Demerits for not giving the Padawan braid a solo entry, though they do at least call it “gross.” (It is.)

→ StarWars.com has a ton of stuff, naturally, all gathered on their own little page. (I enjoyed the anniversary poster retrospective.) The Star Wars Show interviewed Tim Zahn yesterday, that was nice.

→ And finally, props to The Hollywood Report for tracking down Laurie Goode, the stormtrooper who hit his head.
