You gotta feel for JJ Abrams. The next Star Trek film is the most anticipated, yet angst-ridden, film since the Star Wars prequels. (Maybe this is why he was talking with George?)
The latest batch of whining and gossiping includes:
– Roddenberry’s son expressing his complete and utter doubt that a prequel will work
– Jennifer Garner as the next Vulcan sex symbol? (Look out, Jolene Blalock!)
– Russell Crowe as the main bad-guy?
Zachary Quinto has no qualms. He wanted the Spock gig.
If only they’d done these kinds of studies in my statistics class! I might have gotten a better grade.
So is the fabled Red Shirt Phenomenon on Star Trek real? According to a recent statistical analysis, yes, but not as much as one might think.
If you’re wearing a red shirt and beam down to the planet, you have a 53% probability of dying. However, if Kirk gets lucky with the local space hottie? That drops way down to 12%; which puts you in about the same range as the yellow and blue shirts.
They should put this into the Starfleet manual. (via)
According to James McAvoy’s agent, he’s not playing Scotty in the new Trek. Yeah, we’ve never heard that one before or anything.
Things seem to be getting interesting in Trek fandom; at least in the media.
USA Today speaks to Zachary Quinto (Young Spock) about bonding with Leonard Nimoy (Old Spock) and living the “homebody” existence.
Klingons get the 501st treatment in the papers.
And a paper in the UK says the casting of James McAvoy as Scotty is a done deal.
So Paramount continues to try to reignite the enthusiasm of the Trek faithful (and hopefully some of the not-so-faithful) with the Official Star Trek Convention in Las Vegas, this past weekend.
StarTrek.com has posted blogs from Thursday and Friday, so far. And while it seems that all the special guests proclaim their excitement about the new movie, the biggest buzz was generated by a piece of paper: notably, the next teaser poster.
Still, doubt remains that JJ Abrams can overcome the odd number curse and get things going again for Trek. We’ll see!
The latest entry in the “who will be in the next Trek movie” saga is the casting of Pavel Chekov; the youth-targeted, Beatles-reminiscent navigator.
Anton Yelchin is supposedly under not-so-well-kept-secret negotiations with Paramount.
With a name like that, how could he not be cast?
Or that would be Cruise goes on Trek… As in Tom Cruise. Granted, the role would be little more than a cameo, but it still caused a bit of barf in my mouth when I came across this bit of news today on the internets. I’m counting on the fact that this “news” is little more than rumor at this point.
Zachary Quinto is young Spock. Meanwhile, Leonard Nimoy will reprise his role as original flavor Spock in scenes that will act as a framing device for the film.
