The Last Jedi failed to break Star Wars‘ 34-year streak at the Oscars, losing in all four categories it was nominated in. Both sound awards went to Dunkirk, Blade Runner 2049 took VFX, and John Williams lost out on score to Alexandre Desplat for The Shape of Water.
The Shape of Water was the night’s big winner, taking home four Oscars, including Best Picture and Best Director for Guillermo del Toro.
Oscar Isaac, Mark Hamill, Kelly Marie Tran and BB-8 did present Best Animated Short and Feature, the highlight being BB-8 getting scratchies:

Kelly’s Instagram is worth a look though, and Mark Hamill was out doing his thing on the red carpet. Lupita Nyong’o and Laura Dern were also in attendance.
No Star Wars film has received an Oscar since 1984, when Return of the Jedi was awarded a Special Achievement Award for Visual Effects. But hey, we did get to see a porg on the Oscars, so that’s something.
Mark Hamill is getting a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame! The ceremony, on March 8, will be emceed by George Lucas (!), Harrison Ford (!!) and Leron Gubler, president and CEO of the Hollywood Chamber of Commerce.
The list of stars who appear on the Walk of Fame is expansive, but it does include (at least) Ford, Billy Dee Williams, Laura Dern and Alec Guinness, as well as effects legend Dennis Muren, Solo director Ron Howard and Alan Ladd Jr., the studio executive who was instrumental in getting Star Wars off the ground.
Hamill had a street named after him in San Diego last year.
Added to the ranks of presenters at the 2018 Academy Awards today are Mark Hamill, Kelly Marie Tran, Oscar Isaac and Lin-Manuel Miranda. (Remember him?) A previous announcement included Laura Dern.
The 90th Academy Awards are airing on March 4 at 8:00 p.m. ET on ABC. The Last Jedi is up for four awards.
Some sad, scared little men edited almost all the women out of The Last Jedi. Their version is 46 minutes long, less than half the actual running length, cutting out most of Holdo, nearly all of Rose’s lines, and of course Luke milking the thala-siren. (No boobs allowed!) But the best part? The reaction of the actual men involved in the movie.

Disney has posted a few new The Last Jedi things on their award site, including several new stills, an extended score, production notes and the BAFTA Q&A with Rian Johnson and the cast.
Rian Johnson talks to People about how they filmed the “Force connection” scenes between Rey and Kylo Ren. Remember those paparazzi shots of Adam Driver flying into Ireland with Daisy Ridley and Mark Hamill, and all those rumors of a big fight scene with the Knights of Ren? Jokes on us. Johnson has another wide-ranging interview over at the Daily Beast. He also explains Snoke’s big scene and the Kylo shirtless scene.
The NYT takes a look at the women behind Lucasfilm’s story group, mainly Kiri Hart. It’s not just Pablo!
You’ll never guess what from the Legends EU made it into the movie. Sort of. Hey, at least it’s not something Courtship of Princess Leia this time.
On that note, there’s a ton of meta happening on Tumblr. I’m reblogging a lot of it and hope to do a roundup of the highlights here, but for the moment, an analysis of “the sacred Jedi texts.” (There’s plenty more coming – the fandom is prolific and I have a ton of backlog in the drafts folder.)
Tech corner: Neal Scanlan on how they built the film’s creatures, and again | Visual effects supervisor Ben Morris on creating Crait and the Earth equivilants | How Yoda was rebuilt | The movie’s sound design | The creation and science of that silent hyperspace scene.
In the second part of Entertainment Weekly’s The Last Jedi spoilerfest, Rian Johnson and team tackle Supreme Leader Snoke, Captain Phasma, Mark Hamill’s second role and more.
Now that The Last Jedi is officially out and about, the crew and cast can address some of the choices made in the film. Entertainment Weekly has the details from a post-screening Q&A at the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences.

There a new, wide-ranging interview with writer/director Rian Johnson over at StarWars.com today. Topics include porgs (naturally,) Snoke’s red room/gold robe, and why there hasn’t been much of Finn in the marketing. There’s also a super charming cast interview over at the New York Times.
The charity auction for the custom Louboutins has begin. (Currently in the lead is the Amilyn, for $9,500, followed by Rey, Rose and Phasma.) In true collector fashion, each auction winner will come away with two pairs of the shoe – one signed by Christian Louboutin and the actress, and a second “in the size of your choice” – which means yes, you CAN wear them.
